The invention proposes a method of controlling a network to which a communication device is connected, comprising the steps of obtaining (S) connection capability information from the network and evaluating (S) a connection service based on to the obtained connection capability information. The invention also proposes a correspondingly adapted communication device. Thus, network capabilities related failures may be eliminated since the communication device is aware of the relevant connection capabilities in the network etc.

Service and capability negotiation in a network using single numbering scheme

A method of setting a timer associated with a protocol supportinga data link in a digital mobile communication system in a connection section. At least one party (MSC/IWF, MS) to the connectionsection monitors if the need to change the timer value has arisen. Should such a need be detected, the timer value (S) is set to avalue deviating from the initial value. The need to change the timer value (S) is also determined during the connection, such asin handover, for example by measuring the propagation delay associated with the connection section. This may be implemented by either of the parties to the connection transmitting to the other party a frame (F) which is selected/formed such that the party receiving the frame sends an acknowledgement (Ack) to the transmitting party. The party which transmitted the frame measures the timefrom the moment of transmission of the frame (F) to the arrival of the acknowledgement (Ack) and deduces the propagation delay (D) therefrom.

Method and equipment for setting a timer

The present invention discloses a network system, in which data is transmitted in the form of transmission frames, the system including a network control unit () for controlling communication in the network and a terminal () for receiving and transmitting data from/to the network control unit (). When the network control unit () receives a request for changing from a first user data rate to a second user data rate it adds/deletes fill data (FD) to/from a transmission frame corresponding to the requested change in the user data rate for transmitting data to the terminal () at the second user data rate. The terminal () detects the change in the amount of fill data (FD) and changes the user data rate transmitted to the network control unit () according to the detected change. In this system, it is possible to smoothly change the data rate without affecting the quality of service.

Flexible data rate change in a mobile network

The invention relates to an interworking method and apparatus for a data connection between a first terminal supporting a first processing scheme and a second terminal supporting a second processing scheme, wherein the first and second processing schemes are checked, and the first processing scheme is adapted to the second processing scheme, when the checking indicates that the first processing scheme is not supported by the second terminal. Thus, a mapping is performed and different processing capabilities are used on different portions of the data connection.

Interworking method and apparatus

The invention relates to radio systems and particularly to a handover and interworking between two radio systems utilizing different link protocols. According to the invention, in a handover the radio link protocol of the old (handover source) radio system is also retained after the handover in the new (target) radio system. The 'old' radio link protocol is merely adapted to a physical traffic channel of the new radio system. One manner of implementing the adaptation to the traffic channel is to set up the radio link protocol of the 'new' radio system between the mobile station and the interworking function and to transmit the radio link protocol frames of the &#x201c;old&#x201d; radio system within the radio link protocol of the new radio system. Due to this simple but effective arrangement, possibly ongoing sequences of selective retransmissions and retransmission requests of the old radio link protocol are not interrupted or disturbed, wherefore it is also possible to avoid the manipulation of buffer synchronization which might possibly lead to retransmission complications and loss or doubling of data as a result of the handover.

Handover and interworking in radio system

Disclosed herein is a method and apparatus for measuring usage of system resources in a communication network. The apparatus includes devices for measuring radio resources, data service units and transmission characteristics in the system. The devices for measuring are adapted for performing a respective collective measurement. The method includes collectively measuring transmission parameters including radio resources, data service units and transmission characteristics. The method provides for dimensioning system resources according to transmission demand in the network.

Device and method for measuring the usage of system resources in a communication network

The invention relates to data transmission in telecommunication systems and particularly in radio systems. The invention employs 'payload numbering' instead of or in addition to conventional frame numbering. Data () is split into fixed-length data blocks or payload units (). The size of a block is preferably equal to or smaller than the shortest information field in frames () of the protocol(s) used. Each protocol frame carries one or more payload units. In an optimum situation the length of the information field in a protocol frame equals n * the length of the payload unit, where n is an integer. Instead of frame numbering (in some special cases possibly in addition to it) the protocol frame carries payload numbers both for indicating the payload units (data blocks) conveyed in the protocol frame and for acknowledging the received blocks.

Data transmission methods with payload unit numbering in a telecommunication system

The invention relates to an interconnection between different types of communications networks. A first core network element is connected to a first access network by means of a first protocol stack used between the first core network element and a network element in the first access network. A second core network element is connected to a second access network by means of a second protocol stack used between the second core network element and a network element in the second access network. The first core network element is arranged to support and use at least parts of the second protocol stack towards the second core network element, and the second core network element is adapted to extend the parts of the second protocol stack towards the first core network element.

Arrangement for interconnecting communications networks

In the present invention, a measuring device is proposed for measuring system resources which are used by a communication connection in a telecommunication network, said device comprising: means for receiving a request of allocation of system resources to establish said connection, said request indicating a preferred level of said resources, examining means ( ) for examining parameters (BCIE ) indicating said requested resources, allocating means ( ) for allocating, on the basis of the examination by said examining means ( ), available resources indicated by parameters (BCIE ) of the communication network to the communication connection, and comparing means ( ) for comparing the level of the requested resources (BCIE ) and the level of the resources allocated by the communication network (BCIE ). Furthermore, a corresponding measuring method is proposed. Using the present invention allows a operator to obtain improved knowledge of system resources.
