Antenna systems are provided. An antenna system includes a beamforming array having a plurality of vertical columns of radiating elements that are each configured to transmit at least three antenna beams per polarization. Moreover, the antenna system includes a beamforming radio having a plurality of radio frequency ports per polarization that are coupled to and fewer than the vertical columns.

A solution for controlling active antenna modules in a cellular communication system. According to an aspect, a method includes causing, at a first time interval, a first antenna module and a second antenna module to respectively provide overlapping coverage areas inside a service area of an access node of a cellular communication system, wherein the first antenna module and the second antenna module are antenna modules of the access node and each of the first antenna module and the second antenna module provides respective coverage in the service area within the overlapping coverage area, the respective coverages being independent of one another; and causing, at a second time interval, the first antenna module and the second antenna module to respectively provide non-overlapping coverage areas.

A base station antenna includes a first column of radiating elements containing a first plurality of physical rows of radiating elements, which are collectively operable as a first logical row of radiating elements responsive to a first radio frequency signal (RF), and (ii) a second plurality of physical rows of radiating elements, which are collectively operable as a second logical row of radiating elements responsive to a second radio frequency signal (RF). The radiating elements within both the first column and the first logical row include a first plurality of radiating elements responsive to RF, and a second plurality of radiating elements responsive to a phase delayed version of RFgenerated by a first adjustable phase shifter. A radio frequency (RF) signal generator is provided to adjust a phase of RFrelative to a phase of RF, in-sync with a change in a phase delay (and static electric tilt) provided by the first adjustable phase shifter. This in-sync adjustment may support an improvement antenna beam characteristics, including suppression of undesired side-lobes.
