A process of production of alumina short fiber reinforced magnesium or magnesium alloy product features formation of alumina short fiber pre-form utilizing a inorganic binder which is composed of one or more oxides having thermodynamically stability equivalent to or higher than MgO. In the alternative, the composite almina fiber and binder surfaces of the alumina short fiber pre-form can be coated by a baked coating layer. Pressure casting of molten magnesium or magnesium alloy is then performed for forming the final products.

Alumina short fiber reinforced magnesium alloy having stable oxide

A composite material having heat resistance at elevated temperatures and excellent mechanical properties to be used for parts of automotive vehicles, especially for pistons, machine parts or aerospace materials is composed of fiber reinforced magnesium alloy as a matrix having a composition of magnesium alloy containing up to 2 to 15 wt %, but preferably 4 to 7 wt % of neodymium or corresponding amount of neodymium-type metals, for example, didymium containing at least 70 wt % of neodymium. The composite material is composed of 70 to 95 vol % of the matrix and 30 to 5 vol % of short alumina fibers as the reinforcement.

A diecasting apparatus according to the invention comprises an injection cylinder vertically arranged having its upper end communicating with a cavity of dies for diecasting, a melt chamber cylinder coaxially located below the injection cylinder and having an inner diameter substantially the same as that of the injection cylinder, a plunger movable through the melt chamber and injection cylinders to form a melt chamber defined by an upper surface of the plunger and an inner surface of the melt chamber cylinder, thereby to form a hermetically closed space by the melt chamber and cavity, and heating and melting means arranged about the melt chamber cylinder, thereby enabling the molten material to be injected into the cavity through the shortest distance for the shortest period of time, whereby high quality diecast products of high melting point metals are obtained.

A method for joining a member to a diecast article using an apparatus comprising dies, an injection sleeve communicating with a cavity of the dies and a plunger tip slidably arranged in the injection sleeve for filling the cavity of the dies with the molten metal previously poured in the injection sleeve. According to the invention, the plunger tip is formed with an insert aperture for receiving the member to be joined such that a portion of the member extending beyond an upper surface of the plunger tip is exposed in the molten metal when it is poured in the injection sleeve, thereby sufficiently transmitting the heat of the molten metal to the portion of the member to obtain a metallurgical bond at a boundary between the member and the diecast article.

A die casting machine for manufacturing impellers made of Ni-, Co- or Fe-based heat resistant alloys. A die assembly which is provided with a plurality of radially retractable segments, is coaxially arranged and vertically movable with respect to an injection assembly. Die casting is effected in the lowermost position of the die assembly with the segments closed. The product is ejected out of the machine in the uppermost position of the die assembly with the segments retracted. A short runner minimizes heat dissipation of the molten metal and improves uniformity and quality of the product.
