A write head for a data storage device comprises a main pole, a trailing shield, and a write-field enhancement structure disposed in a write gap between the main pole and the trailing shield. The write-field enhancement structure comprises a non-magnetic spacer, a non-magnetic layer, and a magnetic DC-field-generation (DFG) layer. The DFG layer is sandwiched between the non-magnetic layer and the non-magnetic spacer. The write head also includes at least one magnetic notch adjacent to at least one of the main pole or the trailing shield. The non-magnetic spacer is adjacent to a magnetic notch. Some embodiments include multiple magnetic notches. Also disclosed are data storage devices comprising such write heads.

Disclosed herein are perpendicular magnetic recording writers for providing spin-torque-assisted write field enhancement, and hard disk drives comprising such magnetic write heads. A spin-torque-assisting element is disposed in the write gap and extends to the air-bearing surface (ABS). The spin-torque-assisting element comprises a non-magnetic layer in contact with a main pole, a DC-field generation (DFG) layer with a first side in contact with the non-magnetic layer, and a spacer layer in contact with a second side of the DFG layer. A magnetization of the DFG layer is configured to be aligned substantially parallel to a write gap magnetic field generated by the main pole during a write process, and the magnetization of the DFG layer is configured to flip its direction in response to application of a bias current exceeding a specified magnitude.

Magnetic write head for providing spin-torque-assisted write field enhancement

Disclosed herein are magnetic write heads and hard disk drives comprising such magnetic write heads. A magnetic head comprises a magnetic pole, a first shield separated from the magnetic pole at an air-bearing surface (ABS) of the magnetic head, a magnetic layer disposed between the magnetic pole and the first shield, wherein the magnetic layer comprises at least of iron, cobalt, or nickel, a first non-magnetic layer disposed between the magnetic pole and the magnetic layer, and a second non-magnetic layer disposed between the magnetic layer and the first shield, wherein the magnetic layer is the only magnetic layer at the ABS that is between the main pole and the first shield that is not adjacent to the main pole or the first shield.

Disclosed herein are magnetic write heads for providing spin-torque-assisted write field enhancement, and hard disk drives comprising such magnetic write heads. Within the write gap, each magnetic write head comprises a main pole, a trailing shield, a spacer disposed between the main pole and the trailing shield, a non-magnetic layer disposed between the main pole and the trailing shield, and a magnetic DC-field-generation (DFG) layer adjacent to the spacer and disposed between the spacer and the non-magnetic layer. In some embodiments, the DFG layer is the only magnetic layer within the write gap that is not adjacent to the main pole or the trailing shield.

In one embodiment, a magnetic head includes a main pole configured to emit a recording magnetic field for affecting a magnetic medium, the main pole configured to serve as a first electrode and having a front portion at an air bearing surface (ABS) of the magnetic head and a rear portion extending from the front portion in an element height direction perpendicular to the ABS, wherein an upper surface of the front portion of the main pole is angled with respect to a plane of deposition at a first angle of inclination of greater than 0&#xb0;, and wherein at least a portion of an upper surface of the rear portion of the main pole is angled at a first angle of declination greater than 0&#xb0; with respect to the plane of deposition, an upper shield positioned above the main pole, the upper shield configured to serve as a second electrode, and a microwave oscillator positioned between the main pole and the upper shield at the ABS.

In one embodiment, a magnetic recording head includes: a main pole configured to generate a magnetic field for recording data on a magnetic recording medium; an oscillation device positioned above the main pole in a track direction, the oscillation device being configured to generate a high-frequency magnetic field; a magnetic capping layer positioned above the oscillation device in the track direction, the magnetic layer having a front region at a media facing side (MFS) of the magnetic recording head and a rear region positioned behind the front region in an element height direction, wherein a thickness of the front region of the magnetic capping layer is less than a thickness of the rear region thereof; and a trailing shield positioned above the magnetic capping layer in the track direction.

Magnetic capping layer structure for a spin torque oscillator

A magnetic write head having a write pole with a tapered trailing edge and a magnetic oscillator formed on the trailing edge of the write pole. The magnetic oscillator is sandwiched between the magnetic write pole and a trailing magnetic shield. The write head also includes a non-magnetic, electrically conductive bump structure located over a back portion of the magnetic oscillator between the magnetic oscillator and the trailing magnetic shield. The presence of the non-magnetic, electrically conductive bump structure causes electrons to properly flow through the magnetic oscillator in a direction that is generally perpendicular to the plane of the magnetic oscillator, even when the magnetic oscillator is formed on an inclined plane on the tapered trailing edge of the write pole. This thereby ensures optimal performance of the magnetic oscillator.

In one embodiment, an apparatus includes at least one read head, each read head including a magnetoresistive (MR) read element, having a lower shield layer, an underlayer positioned above the lower shield layer, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) layer positioned above the underlayer, a magnetization pinned layer positioned above the AFM layer, an insulating layer positioned above the magnetization pinned layer, and a magnetization free layer positioned above the insulating layer, magnetic side shields positioned on both sides of the MR read element in a cross-track direction, and at least one shield excitation coil configured to excite magnetization of the side shields. In another embodiment, a method for forming a read sensor includes forming a MR read element, forming magnetic side shields on both sides of the MR read element in a cross-track direction, and forming at least one shield excitation coil configured to excite magnetization of the side shields.

A microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) write head includes a yoke structure with a main pole, a flux return pole, and a trailing magnetic shield. The main pole includes a write pole with a tip at the disk-facing surface, a sub pole with an end recessed from the disk-facing surface and an electrically insulating layer between the write pole and the sub pole. The spin-torque oscillator (STO) is located at the disk-facing surface between the trailing shield and the write pole tip. The insulating layer assures that the STO current is not shorted between the return pole and the write pole. The insulating layer between the write pole and the sub pole increases the area of the junction between the return pole and write pole, which reduces the magnetic reluctance of the yoke structure.

Microwave assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) write head and system

Embodiments described herein provide an MAMR head structure which provides a magnetic recording device equipped with a high density recording magnetic head. Characteristic variations caused by misalignment of a main pole and a STO may be reduced because the STO may be aligned with a position on the main pole where the field intensity is enhanced. The enhanced field intensity may be provided by an angle of inclination &#x3b8;1 of an inclined surface on which the STO may be formed when compared to an angle of inclination &#x3b8;2 around the main pole in the region of the ABS. Further embodiments provide a method for producing an MAMR head in which an exposed surface of the main pole has an angle of inclination &#x3b8;2 which is less than the angle of inclination &#x3b8;1 for the inclined surface of the main pole where the STO is mounted.

Embodiments described herein generally relate to a magnetic read head wherein read sensitivity distribution is made asymmetric in the off-track direction. The method of making the magnetic head is also disclosed. The read head may comprise a magneto-resistive effect element with an asymmetric structure around the element in the off-track direction and the read sensitivity profile in the off-track direction may also be asymmetric.

In one embodiment, a magnetic head includes a main pole configured to write data to a magnetic medium using a magnetic field, a return pole positioned above the main pole at a media-facing surface of the magnetic head, the return pole being configured to return magnetic flux from the main pole after it has exited a magnetic medium, and a coil configured to produce magnetic flux in the main pole, the coil being positioned below the return pole, wherein a film thickness of a first turn of the coil on a media-facing surface side thereof is less than a film thickness of a second turn of the coil. Embodiments of the present invention provide a perpendicular magnetic recording head which can suppress reduction in recording field and efficiently reduce a fringe field. According to one embodiment, a side shield disposed at a side of each side face in a cross track direction of a main pole is arranged at a far leading side compared with the main pole.

Perpendicular magnetic recording head and method of manufacturing the same

In accordance with one embodiment, a magnetic head includes a main pole configured to emit a recording magnetic field for affecting a magnetic medium, a spin torque oscillator (STO) device in electrical communication with and positioned above the main pole in a track direction, the STO device being configured to generate a high-frequency magnetic field which is superimposed with the recording magnetic field in order to record data to the magnetic medium when current flows to the STO device, and a heat sink positioned near the STO device, the heat sink being configured to reduce a temperature of the STO device when current flows to the STO device. In another embodiment, a method includes forming a heat sink behind a STO device in an element height direction perpendicular to a media facing surface, and/or on both sides of the STO device in a cross-track direction at the media facing surface.
