A circuit configured to control a switching device to reduce a current in a charged coil is disclosed. The circuit is configured to monitor a kickback voltage generated by the decreasing current in the coil. The circuit is further configured to adjust a rate at which the current is reduced in order to limit the kickback voltage. Limiting the kickback voltage during shutdown can prevent a spark at a spark gap that is inductively coupled to the coil and can allow for greater flexibility in the time taken to shut down the coil without overheating components or generating an unwanted spark. Additional, limiting the kickback voltage during shutdown can allow for a pseudo ramp wave to control the circuit during the shutdown because voltage spikes cause by abrupt changes in the pseudo ramp wave are limited.

Circuit and method for a kickback-limited soft shutdown of a coil

Various embodiments of the present technology comprise a method and apparatus for an ignition system. In various embodiments, the ignition system activates a soft shutdown of an ignition coil in the event of an over dwell condition. The apparatus comprises a first counter and a second counter that are selectively activated at predetermined events. An output of the second counter controls the value of a reference current that decreases linearly over time and wherein a rate of change of the reference current may be adjusted according to a frequency of a clock signal. In various embodiments, the soft shutdown operates independent of the supply voltage and temperature.

Methods and apparatus for an ignition system

Circuits and methods to control a current in a coil are disclosed. The circuit and methods provide over-dwell protection and soft shut-down functionality to safely discharge the coil. The safe discharge of the coil is facilitated by a soft-start ramp signal that reduces the coil current gradually by controlling a switching device according. A profile of the soft-start ramp signal over time determines the gradual reduction. The profile of the soft-start ramp signal can be adjusted to set (i) an over-dwell period of the coil current, after which the coil current is shut down, and (ii) a soft shut-down period, over which the coil current is gradually reduced.

Circuit and method for coil current control

Circuits and methods for controlling a coil current are disclosed. The control utilizes current sources to source/sink charge to/from a capacitance of a switching device to turn the switching device ON/OFF. When turned OFF, the switching device blocks coil current from flowing, which can create a large kickback voltage on the coil. To reduce the large kickback voltage, the capacitance can be discharged slowly by a small discharge current. The disclosed circuits and methods provide a gradual reduction of the coil current at a rate that is slow enough to prevent a spark while minimizing a period for shutdown to prevent overheating. The disclosed systems and methods may be simpler than other approaches because the soft shutdown is no ramp signal is required for the reduction. Instead, a rate of gate capacitance discharge is controlled to maintain the kickback voltage at a particular level.
