The present invention relates to a water-based metallic coating composition comprising a resin composition for a water-based coating composition, a metallic pigment, metal silicate and a polyamide resin and capable of forming a coating film which is excellent in a flip-flop property and which is free of metallic mottling.

The present invention provides a method for forming a topcoat which comprises applying an aqueous colored base coating composition comprising a hydroxyl- and carboxyl-containing acrylic resin, a melamine resin, an alicyclic epoxy-containing compound, a neutralizing agent, and a coloring pigment to a substrate and applying to the base coat an organic solvent type clear coating composition to be cured by the crosslinking reaction between a carboxyl group and an epoxy group.

This invention provides an aqueous intercoat composition comprising, as main components, (A) a polyester resin having a hydroxyl group and a carboxyl group in one molecule, (B) a blocked product of at least one polyisocyanate selected from a polymer of aliphatic polyisocyanate, an adduct of said polymer with an active hydrogen-containing compound and an adduct of aliphatic polyisocyanate with an active hydrogen-containing compound, and (C) water. The aqueous intercoat composition of the invention is capable of forming a coating film excellent in chipping resistance.
