Systems and methods are provided for in vivo pre-surgical characterization of lenses, such as cataractous lenses. A method comprises obtaining an electromagnetically-measured value related to the axial thickness of the lens, obtaining an ultrasound-measured value related to the axial thickness of the lens, calculating a relationship value based upon the electromagnetically-measured value and the ultrasound-measured value, and determining a mechanical property value based upon the calculated relationship value. The mechanical property may relate to lens hardness, rigidity, or density, or the amount of energy for a phacoemulsification procedure. A system may comprise an optical interferometer for measuring data to obtain the electromagnetically-measured value and an ultrasound biometer for measuring data to obtain the ultrasound-measured value.

In vivo pre-surgical characterization of cataractous lenses

Frequency-domain signal processing of pressure sensor signals and/or flow signals is used to provide on-demand control of a multi-component fluidic system. An example method, implemented in a phacoemulsification system comprises receiving a signal from each of one or more sensors, the one or more sensors comprising at least one pressure sensor, and converting each of one or more of the received signals, including at least one signal from a pressure sensor, to a frequency-domain representation of the received signal. The method further comprises identifying, based on the frequency-domain representations of received signals, at least one event from a set of predetermined events, and controlling one or more fluid control devices, responsive to the identifying.

On-demand fluidics system control based on frequency-domain processing

An ultrasonic cutting tip has a hollow shaft with a proximal and distal end. The proximal end is configured to be attached to an ultrasonic hand piece, and the distal end has a smooth continuous surface. An opening is located near the distal end of the hollow shaft. The opening is configured to cut vitreous when the cutting tip is vibrated ultrasonically in a torsional manner.

An ophthalmic laser system includes a laser engine to generate a beam of femtosecond laser pulses, a laser scanner to scan each laser pulse of the beam in three dimensions according to a scan pattern, and a compound lens comprising a glass lens and a birefringent lens, the compound lens arranged to receive the scanned beam and configured to split each laser pulse of the scanned beam into an ordinary pulse and an extraordinary pulse, producing an ordinary beam comprising ordinary pulses and an extraordinary beam comprising extraordinary pulses. A particular ordinary pulse and a particular extraordinary pulse split from a particular laser pulse are spatially separated in depth along an optical axis of the compound lens, by a distance greater than or equal to 5 &#x3bc;m, and temporally separated by a delay greater than or equal to a pulse duration of the femtosecond laser pulses. An objective is configured to focus the ordinary beam and the extraordinary beam within an ophthalmic target.

The disclosure provides a system including an augmented reality device communicatively coupled to an imaging system of an ophthalmic microscope. The augmented reality device may include a lens configured to project a digital image, a gaze control configured to detect a focus of an eye of an operator, and a dimming system communicatively coupled to the gaze control and the outer surface and including a processor that receives a digital image from the imaging system, projects the digital image on the lens, receives a signal from the gaze control regarding the focus of the eye of the operator, and transitions the outer surface of the augmented reality device between at least partially transparent to opaque based on the received signal. The disclosure further includes a method of performing ophthalmic surgery using an augmented reality device and a non-transitory computer readable medium able to perform augmented reality functions.

Systems and method for augmented reality ophthalmic surgical microscope projection

A surgical system comprises a hand piece, an irrigation conduit in fluid communication with the hand piece to carry fluid toward a surgical site, an aspiration conduit in fluid communication with the hand piece to carry fluid away from the surgical site, a pump interfacing with the aspiration conduit, the pump to create a vacuum pressure in the aspiration conduit to draw fluid through the aspiration conduit, a vacuum relief valve in fluid communication with the aspiration conduit to relieve the vacuum pressure in the aspiration conduit, a pressure sensor to detect a pressure associated with the surgical site, a controller in communication with the vacuum relief valve and the pressure sensor to control the vacuum relief valve to decrease the vacuum pressure in the aspiration conduit when the pressure detected by the pressure sensor is less than a first pressure threshold.

In various embodiments, a phacoemulsification tip may include a shaft and a cutting edge portion having at least a first and second bend. The geometry of the tip may be configured to result in a lateral displacement (u), perpendicular to the shaft during torsional vibration of the tip at frequencies between 10 kHz and 60 kHz, of less than approximately 5% to 25% (e.g., 15%) of the lateral displacement at the distal end point of the tip throughout a portion of the shaft extending from the end of a conical portion of the tip through to the first bend in the cutting edge portion of the tip. Software and/or physical modeling may be used to determine the tip geometry.

A capillary fluid flow valve may include a chamber having a first boundary surface and a second boundary surface defined by a housing. The first and second boundary surfaces may be spaced apart by a gap sized to invoke capillary action between the surfaces. The first surface may be angled relative to the second surface. The chamber may have an inlet port, an outlet port, and an air vent port. The gap at the air vent port may be smaller than the gap at the outlet port and the gap at the outlet port may be smaller than the gap at the inlet port.
