Certain examples described herein relate to printing systems and methods of operating the same. In an example of a printing system, a porosity determiner determines a porosity of a print medium and a signal generator generates a signal relating to a state of a printing fluid collector based on the porosity determined. In an example of a method of operating a printing system, a pressure measurement is obtained from a vacuum system of the printing system when a print medium is present on a media path of the printing system. This is compared to at least one predefined pressure range and, based on the comparison, an indication is provided setting out a state of a printing fluid collector.

In one example, a vapor control heater for a printer includes a housing, a heating element at least partially enclosed by the housing, and a fan to move air over the heating element and into a flow of air from the printer dryer.

In one example, a printer includes a paper path having a drying area, a printhead near the paper path upstream from the drying area, and a convection dryer to force air simultaneously into an upstream part of the drying area at a first density and into a downstream part of the drying area at a second density less than the first density and to force air into the upstream part of the drying area at a first air speed for a duration and then at a second air speed faster than the first air speed.

Drying control

A drying assembly is disclosed. An example apparatus includes fans; a temperature sensor; a print engine to access instructions to cause a printer to perform a printing operation on media; and a processor responsive to an output of the temperature sensor to control the fans to force air onto the media to cause a substantially uniform temperature to be maintained across a width of the media during the printing operation and to cause a sum of air flow output by the fans to be maintained at a substantially constant value.

Drying assembly

An example in accordance with an aspect of the present disclosure includes an ink channel of a printer, coupleable to an ink supply to receive an ink. A sensor assembly is mounted to the ink channel, including a sensor in fluid communication with the ink channel to identify an ink level of the ink supply based on a pressure difference between an air pressure, associated with the sensor assembly, and an ink pressure, associated with the ink channel.

In one example, a print zone heater includes a structure defining a plenum, a heating element, a fan to move air over the heating element into the plenum, and a conduit from the plenum to carry heated air into the print zone.

In one example, a heating system includes a first heater having a first resistive heating element, a second heater having multiple second resistive heating elements arranged in parallel with a group of the second heating elements having a combined resistance equal to a resistance of the first heating element, and a controller to periodically switch power between the first heating element and the group of second heating elements at a zero crossing of an AC power source.

A convection dryer device is disclosed. The convection dryer uses a first fan speed before the leading edge of media reaches a first location in a drying area and a second fan speed, faster than the first fan speed, after the leading edge of media reaches first location.

Methods for curing ink printed on a print medium are disclosed. The methods comprise heating air to a temperature suitable for curing the ink, and blowing the air through a plurality of holes onto the print medium.

Printing apparatus and methods

A drying assembly is disclosed. The drying assembly has at least 2 fan units where each fan unit has a fan. The fan speed of each fan is adjusted independently to control the air temperature from the fan. The airflow through all of the fans is maintained at a constant value.

Examples are provided of controlling sheet media dryers. A controller operates a fan at plural duty cycles and correlates a resulting air pressure to each to define empirical data pairs. A parabolic curve fit to the empirical data is used to derive additional data pairs, and a lookup table is defined using the empirical and derived data pairs. The controller uses the lookup table to operate the fan during normal operations of a sheet media dryer.

According to one example there is provide a printing system that comprises a carriage moveable bi-directionally across a platen. The system additionally comprises a substrate edge detector to detect the position of a lateral edge of a substrate when positioned on a platen, a parking zone in which a substrate edge holder may be parked, and a substrate edge holder pick-up system on the carriage to pick up a substrate edge holder parked in the parking zone and to position the substrate edge holder on a detected lateral edge of a substrate positioned on the platen.

A method to determine an amount of remaining fluid in a replaceable fluid supply unit includes determining a first estimated fluid volume of a first replaceable fluid supply unit in communication with a fluid ejector unit, determining a first correction factor corresponding to the first replaceable fluid supply unit in communication with the fluid ejector unit including at least a first volume ratio parameter corresponding to a ratio of a first nominal fluid volume of the first replaceable fluid supply unit and the first estimated fluid volume, determining an amount of fluid consumed from a second replaceable fluid supply unit configured to replace the first replaceable fluid supply unit, and determining a remaining amount of fluid in the second replaceable fluid supply unit by subtracting the determined amount of fluid consumed from a second nominal fluid volume of the second replaceable fluid supply unit.
