An electrical component having a hybrid air cooling system. The electrical component comprises an air plenum that extends across the width of the component and a first set of air movers that is positionable in a first lateral position downstream of the air plenum within the component enclosure and a second set of air movers that is positionable in a second lateral position downstream of the air plenum within the component enclosure. The first and second sets of air movers each include at least two air movers arranged adjacent each other in series. When both positioned in the component enclosure, the first and second sets of air movers are arranged in parallel such that both serial and parallel air flows are provided within the component enclosure to dissipate heat generated therein.

Electrical component having a hybrid air cooling system and method

A power supply module supplies power to a power bus. The module includes a module casing. Within the module casing is a power supply and a means for cooling the power supply. The power bus supplies power to the means for cooling the module as well as to other devices connected to the power bus. Multiple power supply modules are included in a disk drive array system. Each module provides power to the power bus and to each means for cooling. Upon failure of one of the power supplies, the other of the power supplies will provide power to each device connected to the power bus, including the means for cooling the failed power supply.

An isolation mounting system for disk drive and other storage modules in which the operating unit (e.g., a disk drive) is locked more firmly into its operating position. During shipping and installation the lock is disengaged to allow full use of the elastomeric or other shock mounting system. Thus, the storage module of the present invention simulates a hard mount system during operation and a soft mount system during shipping and handling. A data storage module constructed according to one embodiment of the invention includes a data storage device, typically a disk drive, shock mounted in a housing and a lock selectively engagable between the data storage device and the housing. The lock is operable between a first disengaged position in which the lock does not restrict movement of the data storage device within the housing and a second engaged position in which the lock restricts substantially all movement of the data storage device within the housing. In one preferred version of this embodiment, the lock consists of wedges inserted at each shock mount to effectively remove the bulk of the characteristic compliance.

Locking isolation mounting system for data storage modules

A storage enclosure is provided for electrical/electronic components. The storage enclosure includes an enclosure, an EMI barrier, air flow inlet apertures and exhaust air flow apertures. The enclosure has at least one wall configured to house an electrical/electronic component. The EMI barrier wall has air flow apertures sized sufficiently small to prevent passage of undesirable relatively high frequency EMI/RFI emissions. The barrier wall is supported internally of the enclosure and is configured to subdivide the enclosure into a component enclosure and a cooling fan module enclosure. The air flow inlet apertures are provided in the component enclosure to draw cooling air into the component enclosure and cool components contained therein. The exhaust air flow apertures are sized larger than the EMI barrier apertures and the air flow inlet apertures, and are provided in the cooling fan module enclosure to expel cooling air from the cooling fan module out of the storage enclosure. The component enclosure is configured to contain relatively high frequency EMI/RFI emissions that emanate from components contained therein, and the cooling fan module enclosure is configured to contain relatively low frequency EMI/RFI emissions that emanate from a fan module contained therein while providing for a relatively large passage of cooling air from the storage enclosure. A mass storage system includes data storage modules having fins extending therefrom and further includes an enclosure having guides for slidably receiving the fins of the data storage modules into the enclosure and for enabling a coupled position of the data storage modules within the enclosure. A generally contacting fit is formed between the fins and guides for conducting heat from the data storage modules to the enclosure when the modules are disposed in the coupled position within the enclosure. In a preferred embodiment, the data storage modules include high performance disk drives disposed within carrier housings. The guides act as rail guides for slidably receiving the modules into the enclosure and for enabling electrical connection between the disk drives and the enclosure in the coupled position. The guides and firs are formed to maximize surface area contact therebetween when the drives are in the coupled position. In an alternate embodiment, the data storage modules are positionally biased within the enclosure when in the coupled position for improved surface area contact between the modules and the enclosure.

Heat sink conduction between disk drive carrier and information storage

A hinged door for a rack mounted electronic device includes a pair of hinges which use pins to retain the door on the device. A pair of removable mounting blocks permit the hinges to twist from a free portion to a locking portion so that in the locking position, the door is retained in a hinged relationship with the device. The pins include pin cylinders which, when the door is in the hinged relationship are retained by oppositely disposed receiving slots. The assembly of the door to the mounting blocks establishes a the mounting blocks in a position to mount the electronic device to the rack with the door fixed to the device.

An enclosure for holding shock sensitive mechanisms (such as disk drives) includes compliance members strategically located on a bottom support member for substantially reducing a shock pulse amplitude component transmitted into wall structures of the enclosure and consequently into the shock sensitive mechanisms. The compliance members are positioned so as to contact a support surface upon which the enclosure is set or rests. In a preferred embodiment, the compliance members are positioned on the bottom support member generally away from and/or generally equidistant from any two nearest wall structures, and generally away from any bottom support member portion that is stiffly coupled to the wall structures. As such, the shock pulse acceleration force amplitude component is reduced significantly prior to being transmitted to the wall structures in the event of a typical tilt drop of the enclosure. Also, preferably, the compliance members are molded into or formed onto the bottom support member as part of the bottom support member to provide shock amplitude attenuation to the enclosure at essentially no additional cost and with no additional parts.

A disk drive crash stop/actuator latch combines a crash stop structure with a detent actuator latch which is engaged and latched in a selected radial limit position of the actuator and which is released by the simple expedient of pulsing the actuator motor. The detent actuator latch has a flexible cantilever latch arm secured at one end to the disk drive base. A crash stop face on the distal end of the cantilever latch arm is impacted by a surface on a catch member on the actuator in the radial limit. The cantilever latch arm is bowed between its ends to reduce long column stability to slightly yield to compression loads due to actuator impact. The crash stop face and the surface of the catch member on the actuator are in contact when the detent actuator latch is engaged. A pulse generator coupled to the actuator motor pulses the actuator motor in a sense to drive the actuator away from the crash stop face, overcoming the restraining force of the engaged detent actuator latch.

A disk type of magnetic recording device having a support plate in which parts, normally separately fabricated and separately attached to the support in assembling the device, are simultaneously outsert molded on the support by indexing clamping the support, which has openings therethrough where parts are to be secured, between upper and lower sections of a mold, each mold section having cavities at such openings defining part configurations and/or attach flanges, and thereafter outsert molding the parts by injecting a fluid plastic material such as polycarbonate, into the mold, completely filling the cavities.

A disk drive having a disk stack and a movable actuator movable between position limits for moving one or more transducers between inner and outer radial limits with respect to the disk stack, established by a crash stop structure having at least one crash stop arm or projection for engaging the movable actuator and limiting actuator travel. The crash stop projection is stiff in the direction of actuator impact forces and is also displaceable from crash stop position in a direction different from the direction or impact forces, but biased to crash stop position, to permit forcible displacement of the crash stop projection in the different direction so that the actuator may be moved therepast during actuator installation or removal when assembling or disassembling the disk drive.
