The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for controlling the operation of a motor actuator for positioning a moveable element. Operational characteristics of the movable element over its operational range are determined. A first PWM signal to control the actuator over a first portion of the operational range of the movable element is generated. A second PWM signal to control the actuator over a second portion of the operational range of the movable element is generated. The first PWM signal is based on a linear transfer function having a first gain level and the second PWM signal is based on a linear transfer function having a second gain level. An output position of the moveable element is executed based the first PWM signal or the second PWM signal.

Systems, methods, and computer-readable media are disclosed for a pulse switched high side driver for vehicle sensor. An example method may include switching a transistor of a vehicle circuit to connect a first resistor to a vehicle sensor for a first time period in which exhaust gas temperature values of the vehicle are within a first range of exhaust gas temperatures values. The example method may also include switching, by providing a pulse-width modulation (PWM) signal with an on signal value, the transistor to connect a second resistor to a vehicle sensor for a second period of time in which exhaust gas temperature values of the vehicle are within a second range of exhaust gas temperatures values that are greater than the first range of exhaust gas temperature values, wherein the second resistor and vehicle sensor are also included in the vehicle circuit, wherein the second resistor is in parallel with a first resistor and connected between the transistor and the vehicle sensor. The example method may also include switching, by providing a pulse-width modulation (PWM) signal with an off signal value, the transistor to disconnect the second resistor from the vehicle sensor for a third period of time, the third period of time being greater than the second period of time. The example method may also include reading, using an analog to digital converter (ADC) an output of the vehicle sensor during or after the first period of time.

An electronic control unit suitable for a motorcycle provides diagnostic support, tachometer drive and warning lamp drive all multiplexed onto one pin and driven by a single driver circuit. In a diagnostics mode, the pin is connected to diagnostic equipment. When a diagnostic test has been completed, a tachometer drive signal is output on the pin, the drive signal having a duty cycle set high enough to illuminate the warning lamp if a fault condition is detected by on-board sensors. By combining multiple functions onto a single pin with a single driver circuit, the cost of implementing an engine control unit may be reduced compared with existing arrangements which require separate pins and drivers for each function.

The embodiments described herein include systems with a variable reluctance sensor (VRS) interface and methods of their operation. Embodiments of VRS interfaces include a clearing signal generator configured to generate a clearing signal corresponding with the timing of a noise event. The clearing signal may be configured to clear a post-processing circuit.

Variable reluctance sensor interfaces with clearing and methods of their operation

The embodiments described herein include systems with a variable reluctance sensor (VRS) interface and methods of their operation that may reduce the probability of erroneous transitions in a resulting generated detect signal. As such, the VRS interface can improve the accuracy of position and/or motion determinations, and thus can improve the performance of a wide variety of devices that use variable reluctance sensors. In one embodiment the VRS interface uses a comparator with hysteresis to generate a trailing edge signal. In another embodiment the VRS interface uses bias voltages to reduce the probability of erroneous transitions in a trailing edge signal. In either case the VRS interface can prevent erroneous transitions in the detect signal and thus may improve the performance and accuracy of the system.

Variable reluctance sensor interfaces and methods of their operation

An interface for processing a variable reluctance sensor signal provided by a variable reluctance sensor including an integrator, an arming comparator and a detect circuit. The integrator includes an input for receiving the variable reluctance sensor signal and an output providing an integrated signal indicative of total flux change of the variable reluctance sensor. The arming comparator compares the integrated signal with a predetermined arming threshold and provides an armed signal indicative thereof. The detect circuit provides a reset signal after the armed signal is provided to reset the integrator. A corresponding method of processing the variable reluctance sensor signal is also described.

Variable reluctance sensor interface with integration based arming threshold

The embodiments described herein can provide a variable reluctance sensor (VRS) interface that may reduce the probability of erroneous transitions in a resulting generated detect signal. As such, the VRS interface can improve the accuracy of position and/or motion determinations, and thus can improve the performance of a wide variety of devices that use variable reluctance sensors. To facilitate this, the VRS interface includes a pre-processing circuit configured to modify a VRS signal to prevent the modified VRS signal from dropping below a threshold value and generating erroneous transitions in the detect signal pulse between leading and lagging edges of a tooth. In one embodiment the pre-processing circuit comprises a peak and hold circuit. In another embodiment the pre-processing circuit comprises a resistor-capacitor circuit. In either case the pre-processing circuit can prevent erroneous transitions in the detect signal and thus may improve the performance and accuracy of the system.

Variable reluctance sensor interfaces with signal pre-processing and methods of their operation

A variable reluctance sensor system for processing a variable reluctance sensor signal including an arming comparator and an arming circuit. The arming comparator compares the variable reluctance sensor signal with an arming threshold which decreases proportional to 1/t from a predetermined maximum level and asserts an armed signal when the variable reluctance sensor signal reaches the arming threshold. The arming threshold may be decreased based on a scaling factor multiplied by 1/t to ensure detection of each pulse of the variable reluctance sensor signal. The arming threshold may decrease to a predetermined minimum level sufficiently low to intersect the variable reluctance sensor signal and sufficiently high relative to an expected noise level. The arming threshold is reset in response to a timing event, such as zero crossing of the variable reluctance sensor signal.

A data processor and method for processing position-related input data from a rotational machine whose angular speed is variable and providing output data at an output data rate. The processor comprises a time-based over-sampler for over-sampling the input data at an over-sampling rate greater than the output data rate, and a down-sampler for extracting samples of over-sampled data from the over-sampler at the output data rate so as to provide the output data. The down-sampler is responsive to an angular timing signal related to an angular position of the machine for selecting the samples of over-sampled data to extract based on the angular position. Application to a rotational machine whose angular speed is variable, in particular to an internal combustion engine to control engine operating parameters as a function of cylinder pressure.

A detector circuit for detecting the presence of a remote capacitive sensor having at least two terminals connected via a protection circuit that includes one or more capacitors, the detector circuit comprising: a current supply for changing the charge on the sensor and the protection circuit, a detector for measuring the voltage on one or more of the terminals; wherein the presence of the sensor is determined by changing the charge on the capacitive sensor and the one or more capacitors of the protection circuit in a predetermined manner such that the voltage measurement on the one or more terminals when the sensor is present is significantly different than when the sensor is absent.

A four stroke single cylinder combustion engine starting system with an electrical machine is operable as both a generator and a motor. The starting system has a single cylinder four stroke combustion engine. A piston of the engine is coupled to a shaft of the electrical machine. The starting system also has a motor driver having outputs coupled to the electrical machine. A controller is coupled to the driver and an ignition switch is coupled to the controller. In response to the controller receiving an ignition signal from the ignition switch, the driver controls the electrical machine to operate as a motor so that the electrical machine rotates in a reverse direction to move the piston in a reverse stroke cycle. After the piston reverses to a power stroke position of the reverse stroke cycle the driver controls electrical machine to rotate in a forward direction to move the piston in a forward stroke cycle to attempt to ignite the combustion engine.
