Regions of the audio frequency spectrum that are most susceptible to howling are identified or determined. When detected, these approaches shape the frequency spectrum of the audio going to loudspeakers so that only those howling frequencies are suppressed.

Method and apparatus for attenuation of audio howling

Howling or oscillation in an in-vehicle communications system is prevented when the speaker gain or microphone gain is detected as giving rise to a loop gain equal to or greater than one for a particular frequency or band of frequencies or when the rate of gain of a frequency or band of frequencies increases at a rate that indicating howling will occur. Howling is prevented and not just stopped or suppressed, by adjusting the gain of all frequencies prior to the howling actually starting.

In-car communication howling prevention

Speech from a driver and speech from a passenger in a vehicle is selected directionally using a plurality of directional microphones. Sounds detected as coming from a passenger from a plurality of directional microphones are suppressed from sounds detected as coming from a driver by a second plurality of directional microphones.

Speech from a driver and speech from a passenger in a vehicle is selected directionally using two or more microphones. Samples of speech from a driver and picked up by a first microphone are delayed until samples of the speech picked up by a second microphone is in phase with the speech picked up by the first microphone. Samples of a passenger's speech and picked up by the second microphone are delayed until samples of the passenger's speech picked up by the first microphone are out-of-phase with the speech picked up by the second microphone.
