According to certain aspects of the invention, the adapter can be configured to have a variety of selection mechanisms. For example, the communication device could include an RF switch (,) and control circuitry for selecting either the internal or external antenna for optimum reception. Alternatively, the cable could include an external switch (,) for allowing the user to select the desired antenna. Finally, the cable could include a component which automatically actuates the switch to select the external antenna when the external antenna is connected to the communication device.

An antenna arrangement (402) for a wireless communication device (400) comprises a first element (404) and a second element (406). The first element (404) is coupled to circuitry (408) of the wireless communication device (400). The second element (406) is movable between a first and a second position relative to the first element (404). The performance of the antenna arrangement (402) is substantially less desirable when the second element (406) is between the first and the second position than the performance of the antenna arrangement (402) when the second element (406) is at either the first or the second position. The second element (406) is mechanically spaced apart from and substantially electrically coupled to the first element (404) in both the first and the second position. The antenna arrangement (402) advantageously provides for reduced dimensions while achieving desirable performance.

An electronic device coupling apparatus is used to couple two electronic devices through a hinge. A first electronic device (221) is disposed within the main housing of a radiotelephone (101). The second electronic device (301) is disposed within a movable element (103) of the radiotelephone (101). The coupling apparatus uses a piece of flex (215) which is torsionally twisted upon the opening of the movable element (103) of the radiotelephone (101). A leadless chip carrier for RF power transistors or the like is disclosed which includes a body of insulating material having two major surfaces and side walls joining the major surfaces. In a first embodiment, a pattern of conductive pads is deposited on one major surface. A pattern of conductive contact areas is deposited on the other major surface and distributed interconnecting portions of conductive material are deposited to connect the pads to the respective contact areas. In a second embodiment, larger pads and contact areas are provided on a beryllia substrate to provide a leadless chip carrier for RF transistors capable of handling 8 watts. In a third embodiment, a single slot is made conductive to provide the distributed interconnecting portion for one terminal, while in a fourth embodiment, the slot is changed to a plurality of small, tungsten-filled through holes to provide a virtually hermetically sealed leadless chip carrier for RF power transistors.
