A milling cutter for chip removing machining, including a basic body rotatable in a predetermined direction around a center axis and having a front end surface and an envelope surface that extends axially backward from the front end surface and is concentric with the center axis. A number of indexable milling inserts are mounted in respective peripherally spaced-apart seats having a mutually fixed pitch, each milling insert including an upper side, an under side and at least one clearance surface, the clearance surface together with the upper side delimiting at least two alternately active cutting edges that are uniform in their extension between first and second end points. The cutting edges of each milling insert are situated on different levels in relation to the under side of the milling insert to alter the effective pitch between the active cutting edges of the milling inserts by indexing of at least one of the milling inserts.

Milling cutter as well as a milling insert therefor

Device and method for milling of materials including a milling cutter body including a first end portion and an opposite second end portion. The first end portion is connected to a rotatable spindle and the second end portion is provided with at least one cutting edge. The milling cutter body defines a longitudinal axis and is provided with an axial recess, wherein at least one mass element is arranged in the recess. The axial position of the mass element in relation to the milling cutter body is tuned by use of tuning members included in the device for the tuning of the natural frequency of the device. The mass element is axially locked in relation to the milling cutter body by use of lock members included in the device, in order to optimize the natural frequency of the device for the milling operation in question.

A milling tool intended for chip-removing machining includes a basic body rotatable around a geometrical centre axis and peripherically spaced-apart, detachable cutting inserts, which separately are securable in insert pockets adjacent to chip channels formed in the basic body. The individual cutting insert have at least one edge formed between a chip surface on the top side of the cutting insert and a clearance surface along the periphery side of the cutting insert, and the individual insert pocket is arranged to secure the individual cutting insert in a position in which the chip surface is inclined in relation to the centre axis while forming a positive angle of inclination.

Feed back vibrations of a metallic tool generated during the machining of metallic workpieces are damped by detecting an oscillatory motion of the tool, identifying a frequency of the oscillatory motion and generating a mechanical camping force having the same frequency as the oscillatory motion and applied to the tool in counter-direction to a velocity of the oscillatory motion. The damping force can be of constant amplitude or gradually decreasing amplitude.

Metal cutting apparatus and method for damping feed-back vibrations generated thereby

A toolholder and insert arrangement includes an insert having a cutting portion and a shank portion disposed at a base of the cutting portion. The toolholder has a first end attachable to a spindle and a second end having a shank-receiving opening. When the toolholder is at ordinary room temperature, the shank-receiving opening is smaller than the shank portion. Upon heating of the toolholder to a predetermined temperature above the ordinary room temperature and above an ordinary operating temperature, the shank-receiving opening expands to become at least as large as the shank portion. Upon cooling of the toolholder to a temperature below the predetermined temperature and after insertion of the shank portion in the shank-receiving opening, the shank-receiving opening shrinks to generally conform to a shape of the shank portion.

Tool for chip removing machining includes a shank having a clamping end and a cutting insert at an opposite end, plus a number of piezo-elements for dampening vibrations therein. A pair of cooperating, flat-shaped piezo-elements with lengths that are shorter than that of the shank, are placed on opposing sides of the shaft in an area adjacent to the region where the shank is secured in the machine wherein the direction of polarization of the piezo-elements is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the shank. The piezo-elements constitute actuators that are actively steerable through the application of a voltage from a source of electricity via a control device in the form of a logic control circuit, to thereby dampen the bending vibrations of the shank.
