A cutting insert for a milling tool including an upper side having a central surface, a lower side, a peripheral side surface, and a cutting edge formed between the upper side and the peripheral side surface. The cutting edge having a positively inclined main cutting edge projecting at least partly above the central surface. The upper side includes a rake surface extending inside of and along the at least one cutting edge, sloping downward toward the central surface. A plateau, elevated with respect to the central surface and extending along the main cutting edge, is formed inside the rake surface. A transition between the rake surface and the plateau extends at an angle ϕwith respect to an upper extension plane, wherein ϕ>0°.

A cutting insert includes a top surface, a bottom surface, and a side surface extending between the top and bottom surfaces. The top surface is generally octagonal in shape and the side surface includes eight sides and eight corners. Four edge portions are formed at an intersection of the top and side surface. A first end of each edge portion begins along one of the eight sides at a non-zero distance from any of the eight corners and a second end of the edge portion ends along another one of the eight sides that is non-consecutive to the one of the sides. Each edge portion has a wedge angle that changes from a first angle at the first end of the edge portion to a different angle at the second end of the edge portion. A cutting tool using such an insert is also disclosed.

A cutting insert includes two supporting surfaces and four side surfaces located between the two supporting surfaces. Each side surface intersects with two other side surfaces of the four side surfaces to form four corners. The four side surfaces intersect with the two supporting surfaces to form, at two of the four corners, four cutting corners, each cutting corner including a first and a second cutting edge component, and to form, at two other ones of the four corners, four non-cutting corners. Each supporting surface includes a surface portion and an angled supporting surface. A plane of the angled supporting surface intersects with a plane of the surface portion along a line of intersection and forms a non-zero angle with the plane of the surface portion. A toolholder and a cutting tool are also disclosed.

In a cutting tool for chip removing machining a holder for a cutter has a body received therein and movable with surfaces to bear against the cutter for defining the position of the cutter in the direction of an intended axis of rotation of the holder as well as a screw which may be screwed in a threaded bore in the holder. Spring members are arranged to act between the holder and the body for biasing the body against said screw portions.

A milling tool includes a toolholder having an insert-receiving pocket, a cutting insert having a hole provided therein, the cutting insert being disposed in the pocket and a clamping screw having a male key grip at a first end and zero or more key grips at a second end. The clamping screw extends through the hole in the cutting insert into a threaded hole in the toolholder so that threads on the clamping screw mate with threads in the threaded hole. The male key grip is remote from the cutting insert. The second end of the clamping screw includes an enlarged head including a clamping surface that abuts a clamping surface in the hole of the cutting insert. A clamping screw suitable for a milling tool is also provided.

A tool for chip removing machining includes a tool holder in order to releasably hold at least one cutting insert. The cutting insert is arranged to be fixable in an insert pocket of the tool holder by a locking screw. The locking screw has a head and is in threaded engagement with the tool holder via a threaded joint which is arranged to allow tilting of the locking screw in a working direction of the tool when the locking screw is partly unscrewed so that the cutting insert can be removed from the insert pocket. The head is arranged to clamp against a part of a front side of the cutting insert. The tool holder includes at least one space at least partly arranged to receive the head when the screw is partly unscrewed.

A cutting insert includes a first chip surface, a second surface on an opposite side of the insert from the first chip surface, and a side surface extending between the first chip surface and the second surface, at least part of one first cutting edge being defined by an intersection of the side surface with the first chip surface. The side surface includes at least one recess, the recess including an insert supporting surface for supporting the insert relative to a protruding abutment surface on a toolholder and a flat auxiliary insert supporting surface for supporting the insert relative to a non-protruding, flat abutment surface. An indexable milling insert has a parallelepipedic shape. The cutting insert includes a mounting hole placed centrally in the cutting insert, a first support side and a second support side, which support sides are parallel with each other and act as alternating support sides. The cutting insert is provided with main cutting edges, which are orientated perpendicularly to the center axis of the mounting hole as well as provided in such a way that a rotation of the cutting insert around the center axis of the mounting hole to an alternative insert seat alternatively a turning of the cutting insert to an alternative insert seat provides an identical location of the main cutting edges in relation to a piece to be machined. A milling tool equipped with such milling inserts is also provided. The cutting insert can include four identical sides for chip removing machining, the sides extending between the parallel support sides, and each side has exactly two cutting edge areas.

The cutting insert comprises planar support surfaces situated on the sides, and the support surfaces in the respective sides form mutual angles of 60&#xb0;.

A tool includes a holder body having a pocket which has a bottom surface and at least one upstanding support surface. A cutting insert is provided in the pocket, the cutting insert having a side surface structure. The support surface is provided with a cavity which contains a rounded member (e.g., a cylindrical pin). The rounded member is stationarily mounted in the cavity, and a portion of a convexly rounded outer surface of the rounded member protrudes past the cavity and into the pocket. A securing element is attached to the holder to force a side surface of the insert against the convexly rounded surface.

A tool for chip removing metal machining includes a holder, a solid cutting insert mounted in a pocket of the holder, and a clamp for securing the insert. The clamp includes a clamping surface frictionally engaging a planar upper surface portion of the insert. The clamp is attached to the holder by a screw causing a downward projection of the clamp to slide along a sloping surface of the holder in order to displace the clamp and the insert rearwardly until the insert abuts an upstanding support surface of the holder. As the clamp is being tightened-down by the screw, an elastic lip of the clamp is elastically deformed by a surface of the holder to tilt the clamp in a direction causing the clamping surface to bear more firmly against the insert. A stop arrangement terminates the tightening down of the clamp before the clamp is plastically deformed.

The present invention relates to a tool for chip removal including a holder and a cutting insert provided with a through-hole to abut against a base surface and support surfaces in a cutting insert pocket in the holder. A locking pin threaded into a boring in the holder is received by the insert hole. The pin includes a head, a waist, a conical portion, and a threaded portion, which pin portions have a common center axis in an unloaded condition. The locking pin is of a quick action type. The boring includes an eccentric conical recess provided to displace the cutting insert in a direction towards the support surfaces in cooperation with the pin during tightening of the pin in the threaded part of the boring. The pin is provided to be able to secure both negative and positive cutting inserts in the insert pocket, by the head and the waist at a final phase of the pin tightening provided to elastically bend in a direction from the support surfaces. A transition between the head and waist cooperates with a profiled hole in a first type of cutting insert while the head cooperates with a cylindrical insert hole in another type of cutting insert.

A cutting insert is mounted on a holder by means of a locking screw which enables inserts to be exchanged without completely removing the screw from the holder. The insert has a through-hole configured such that a lower end thereof is of cylindrical configuration and includes a tapered section located thereabove. The tapered section expands in cross-section in an upward direction. The locking screw includes a head, the outer surface of which engages the through-hole at diametrically opposite contact locations and imposes a downward force on the insert at each contact location. In one embodiment, the head includes cylindrical surface portions which engage the through-hole at both contact locations. In another embodiment, the head includes a surface expanding in cross-section in an upward direction which engages the through-hole at both contact locations. In a third embodiment, the head includes a cylindrical surface for engaging the through-hole at the first contact location, and an expanding surface for engaging the through-hole at the second contact location.
