An airbag system for a restraint system having an inflatable airbag, and a gas generator which is fluidically connected to the airbag and which inflates the airbag when activated with a gas, the airbag has a retainer for retaining on a safety belt of the safety belt device, the airbag has a main chamber fluidically connected to the gas generator and which, in a fastening position of the airbag system predetermined by the retainer, rests against the safety belt, and at least one additional chamber is provided on the side of the main chamber facing away from the safety belt and is separated from the main chamber by means of a partition wall, and at least one opening, via which the additional chamber is fluidically connected to the main chamber, is provided in the partition wall.

A cover element () for an airbag unit having a stationary section, a first flap (), and a second flap (), wherein the first flap () is connected to the stationary section by at least one first hinge (), and the second flap () by at least one second hinge (). The two flaps () are connected to each other by a tear connection (). The first flap () has an outer area () and an emblem area (), which protrude at least partially from the outer area () and extend into the second flap (). In order that the emblem area () is not in the way of the expanding airbag even if the emblem area () is relatively large, the emblem area () is connected to the outer area () of the first flap () by a third hinge (), so that the emblem area () can swing against the outer area () when the first flap () is open.

An air-bag for use in a safety arrangement in a motor vehicle includes a front panel and a rear panel. The two panels are superimposed and attached to one another around their peripheries in order to define an inflatable chamber. The front panel is provided with an aperture within which is secured an additional panel. The additional panel has an area greater than the aperture and is configured so as to define a plurality of adjacent substantially wave-shaped projections which extend forwardly from the front panel when the air-bag is inflated.

A safety arrangement to provide protection for an occupant in a motor vehicle includes a seat-belt provided with a measuring device to measure energy absorbed by the seat-belt. The measuring device may determine the length of safety-belt paid-out after a retractor locks, the belt being paid-out against a force provided by a force-limiter. The energy absorbed is calculated and is used to control the vents of a ventable air-bag. The air-bag is vented if a substantial part of the energy of the occupant is absorbed by the seat-belt, but is not vented if a large proportion of the energy has not been absorbed by the seat-belt.
