As example method includes queuing network traffic received at one or more input ports of one or more input modules of a network switch to a given output port of an output module of the network switch according to a first queuing system, subsequent to queuing the network traffic according to the first queueing system, queuing at least a portion of the network traffic according to a second queuing system instead of the first queueing system. According to the first queuing system, the network traffic is queued according to a first degree of granularity. According to the second queuing system, at least the portion of the network traffic is queued according to a second degree of granularity. The second degree of granularity is greater than the first degree of granularity.

Dynamically switching queueing systems for network switches

Disclosed is a method and a device for generating report data related to a status of an interface of a network element are presented. The method includes: activating a delay timer when the interface status changes, setting delay-based data to express the interface status at the end of a delay determined by the delay-timer, setting dampening-based data to express the interface status if a penalty value fulfils a pre-determined condition and otherwise to express that the interface is non-utilizable, and setting the report data to express that the interface is utilizable if both the delay-based data and the dampening-based data express that the interface is utilizable. The penalty value is decreased with a dampening rule, and the penalty value is increased when the interface becomes non-utilizable and increasing the penalty value within a time-window is below a desired limit.

Method and a device for generating report data related to an interface status

A system using the Ethernet OAM functionality for finding the smallest of hop-specific data transfer speeds related to a data transfer path from a first network element () to a second network element () is presented. The first network element is configured to transmit, to the second network element, first data including an Ethernet OAM message. Each intermediate network element () located on the data transfer path is configured to update the first data to indicate so far smallest of the hop-specific data transfer speeds when the first data passes through the intermediate network elements. After receiving the first data, the second network element transmits, to the first network element, second data indicating the smallest of the hop-specific data transfer speeds. Thus, the first network element can be made aware of capacity changes taking place on the data transfer path.

Method and a system for finding smallest hop-specific data transfer speed

A switch device for a network element includes a transfer system () for transferring data from ingress line interfaces of the network element to egress line interfaces of the network element in accordance with control information associated with the data. The transfer system includes a control section () configured to compare data traffic load to capacity available to the data traffic load at one of the egress line interfaces so as to generate a congestion indicator expressing whether a data flow () representing the data traffic load is a potential cause of congestion at the one of the egress line interfaces. The control section is further configured to direct a congestion control action to the data flow if the data flow is a potential cause of congestion. Thus, the congestion management related to the ingress and egress line interfaces can be carried out by the switch device.

Switch device for a network element of a data transfer network

In a system, the functionality is decentralized in a data transmission network so that the need of communications produced by and addressed to data terminals to pass by way of a single point in the data transmission network is diminished. A first data transmission installation is adapted to signal second data transmission installations, each of which is part of a ring-shaped data transmission topology, to be capable of building logical data transmission tunnels directed to the data terminals. Thereby, all the logical data transmission tunnels need not commence or, depending on the direction, terminate at the same point of a data transmission network. In addition, the data transmission installations present in a ring-shaped data transmission topology need not necessarily be taught routing information in order to enable each of these data transmission installations to send data transmission frames to be transmitted to another one of these data transmission installations.

Method, system and installation for forwarding data transmission frames

In a data communication system according to the invention the functionality of the gateway device is distributed in a data communication network thereby reducing the need to direct the data traffic from and to terminals () through a single point in the data communication network. A first data communication device () is arranged to make, through signalling, second data communication devices () capable of directing the data communications of the terminals to the starting points of the respective logical data communication tunnels (). This way there is no need for all logical data communication tunnels to start from, or depending on the direction, to end at, the same point in the data communication network.
