An apparatus, method, and computer-readable medium in various embodiments includes a transmitter that establishes a radio connection that sends signals to a user equipment using a required transmission power; a receiver that receives a signal sent by the user equipment over the radio connection, the signal comprising at least one power control command determined by the user equipment; and a processor configured to specify the required transmission power in the transmitter using a delay requirement of a service to be transferred over the radio connection and the at least one power control command as a basis for making the power control decision, wherein at least one dedicated physical channel and at least a part of a shared physical channel that is time-divisionally shared are allocated to the user equipment on the radio connection, wherein the processor is further configured to carry out the power control of the time-divisionally shared physical channel on the basis of the power control decision of the dedicated physical channel.

The present invention relates to a method in a radio communication system providing packet data services. A radio communication system providing packet data services and a packet data scheduler (PS) are also disclosed. In accordance with the method capacity is requested for a packet data bearer, whereafter capacity is allocated for the packet data bearer based on a first timing scheme. The allocated capacity may be modified based on a second timing scheme. The packet data scheduler (PS) comprises two timers (T, T) fore implementing the two different timing schemes.

A method and device for controlling a power used for transmitting data between a terminal device and a transceiver device, wherein the method comprises monitoring during predetermined time units the power used in a transmission between the terminal device and the transceiver device, requesting an increase or a decrease of the power used in the transmission, storing a predetermined number of specific information elements of subsequent time units, calculating a power raise requested for the power, calculating an average received power during a plurality of subsequent time units and determining whether the calculated power raise is greater than a sum of the calculated average power of transmission and a predetermined level. If the determination is positive, the increase of the power is prohibited even if an increase is requested. If the determination is negative, an increase of the power used in the transmission is allowed when an increase is requested.

Power control method and device

The invention relates to power control of a network part transmitter in a radio system. The method comprises: establishing a radio connection from the network part transmitter to a user equipment; sending a signal on the radio connection from the network part transmitter using the transmission power required; receiving the signal in the user equipment; measuring a quality value for the signal and determining a power control command based on the quality value, signalling the power control command from the user equipment to the transmitter; specifying the power control required in the transmitter using a delay requirement of a service to be transferred over the radio connection and at least one received power control command as the basis for making the power control decision; continuing the method from the second operation, i.e. sending a signal on the radio connection from the network part transmitter using the transmission power required.

A method and device for initiating uplink data packet communication from a mobile device to a base station on a common packet channel is disclosed. The communication is initiated when the mobile device reads broadcast status of common packet channels, after which the mobile device sends an access preamble to the base station that is acknowledged by the base station, and then the mobile device sends a collision preamble which the base station answers with a matching collision response. If the base station's response to the collision preamble also includes a channel allocation message, then the base station begins uplink data packet communication on an allocated channel provided that the allocated channel previously had free broadcast status. However, if the base station's response to the collision preamble includes a channel allocation message designating channel(s) not previously having free broadcast status, then the mobile device's access attempt is aborted.

Method and apparatus for common packet channel assignment

The invention relates to a frequency hopping method and a radio system. Frequency hopping is implemented downlink to the frequency of the broadcast control channel. The radio system comprises a network part ( ), a subscriber terminal ( ) and a radio connection ( ) as the transmission path. The novelty is that the broadcast control channel does not usually perform frequency hopping. The simplest implementation of the system is a software modification in the network part ( ) and the subscriber terminal ( ). The base station transmits at least at one carrier frequency and a signal to be transmitted at each frequency being divided in the system, on a time-division basis, in frames composed of a plural number of time slots, and the base station transmits on the control channels information about itself to the plurality of mobile stations. In at least one time slot containing control channels there is used a stronger channel coding than in the time slots of traffic channels.

Method for control channel range extension in a cellular radio system, and a cellular radio system

The invention relates to a method of generating a carrier wave of common channels and a radio system. The radio system comprises a network part, subscriber terminals and a bidirectional transmission path between the network part and the subscriber terminal. The bidirectional transmission path consists of frames to be transmitted at a carrier wave frequency. A frame comprises time slots. To a time slot is applied a channel, the channel being either a common channel (FCCH, SCH, BCCH, CCCH) or a dedicated channel (TCH). The carrier wave is generated by adjusting transmission powers of time slots and by using frequency hopping to the effect that first there is transmitted at least one time slot containing a common channel (FCCH, SCH, BCCH, CCCH), with a predetermined reference power. Then, other time slots are transmitted with a transmission power lower than the reference power, and using frequency hopping. In accordance with the invention at least one other time slot determined by the transmission power sequence is transmitted with the reference power, using frequency hopping.

Method of generating a carrier wave of common channels, and a radio system

A method and a system in a digital radio system for signalling between a base station and a subscriber terminal. The signals transmitted over the radio connection between the base station and the subscriber terminal comprise bursts consisting of symbols. The bursts comprise a known training sequence. According to the invention, the training sequence is used for signalling. By the invention, it is possible to implement signalling related to power control of the base station or the subscriber terminal, or in packet transfer, the numbering of bursts, packets or other data blocks.

Signalling method and a digital radio system

The invention relates to a method for transmitting packet switched data in a mobile communications system using an ARQ protocol. In the method the receiver requests, if necessary, retrasnmissions of the originally sent transmission unit, until the quality of the combined transmission unit formed of the originally sent transmission unit and its retransmitted copies corresponds to the predetermined quality level. The signal is not detected until after this. If the packet is interleaved and encoded and it is found out that the packet is not faultless, retransmissions of the transmission units of the packet that are of the poorer quality are requested. The invention also relates to a mobile communications system implementing the method of the invention.

Method for transmitting packet switched data in a mobile communications system

The invention relates to a method for transmitting packet switched data in a mobile communications system using an ARQ protocol. In the method the receiver orders the desired transmission units. The transmitter sends transmission units according to the order. Ordering and transmission are repeated until the quality measured by the receiver from each packet exceeds the predetermined quality value and the data which is to be transmitted and consists of packets is transmitted from the transmitter to the receiver. The invention also relates to a mobile communications system implementing the method of the invention.

A mobile station (,) can request (,) idle time from a network (,) e.g. for measuring the strengths of signals from base stations. Having received the request the network checks (,) whether suitable idle time is coming up and if not, allocates (,) idle time according to the request by the mobile station. Finally, the network informs (,) the mobile station about when and how much the mobile station has measurement time available.

Allocating idle time to a mobile station

The invention relates to a method for determining the position of a mobile station, a positioning system and a mobile station. According to the invention, a mobile station (21) receives signals from at least two base stations (22, 23, 24) and determines time differences of the clocks of the received signals. The mobile station (21) sends information about the time differences to a positioning service center (26) of the mobile communication system which calculates the position of the mobile station (21) on the basis of the time difference information and base station coordinates and clock information. With the method it is possible to measure signals the strengths of which remain below the minimum decoding level. According to the invention, it is also possible to measure bursts containing short training sequencies to improve timing measurement accuracy and measuring speed. The time difference measurement results obtained are transmitted from the mobile station to a base station advantageously by encoding the results in a signalling channel (SACCH) burst. The method enables quick position measuring at short intervals without substantially increasing the load on the mobile station or on the air interface.
