An extrusion expansion of low molecular weight polyalkylene terephthalates having an IV of below 1.0 dl/g to produce gas-charged beads is disclosed. The process includes an extrusion expanding of the resins and an underwater pelletizing of the melt threads. The obtained beads show a composite structure and are characterized by an IV of 0.69 dl/g or more and a melt viscosity &#x3b7;of higher than 300 Pa&#xb7;s.

This invention relates to expanded polyester materials comprised of polyester/acrylic elastomer blend having an improved ductility and impact resistance, while the compression strength, shear strength/modulus of polyesters remain almost unchanged or unworsened. Addition of a non-reactive/reactive acrylic mixture serving as the blend partner improves the melt strength in an expanding process and leads to a better impact resistance of expanded aromatic polyester materials. All expanded polyester materials are produced with help of a reactive process.

The present invention relates to an easy-to-apply, but versatile method for modifying the physical and chemical resistance properties of expanded polyester products, such as fire retardancy and hydrolysis resistance, by melt-modification of the surface layer(s) of said foams and sponges, the manufacturing of such products and the use of such products.
