An internal combustion engine or other internal pressure driven engine of the type capable of converting reciprocal linear powered motion into unidirectional rotary motion, the engine having at least one pair of first and second cylinders with each cylinder having a pair of opposed pistons therein forming a pressure chamber therebetween. Outer ends of each piston carries a piston rod connected to a pivot arm of a respective one way clutch which causes the clutch to oscillate back and forth when the piston moves in and out due to pressure or combustion in the pressure chamber. Alternatively, the piston rods may be configured as gear racks in direct operative engagement with pinion gears of the one way clutches. The clutches are parallel and spaced apart from each other near each end of the cylinders. Each clutch carries a gear on one end which intermeshes with a gear rack assembly having gears and a gear rack which drives a crankshaft and auxiliary flywheel operatively connected to a starter. Once the starter is turned on the kinetic energy of the flywheel and gear rack keeps the on/off clutches in continuous oscillation. The oscillating clutches turn unidirectional drive shafts connected through pinion gears to a main output shaft and main flywheel.

Internal pressure driven engine

There is described herein an apparatus comprising a shoulder washer that comprises a shank, a shoulder coupled with the shank, a bore passing through the shank and the shoulder, and a step. The step is coupled with the shoulder and at least partially encircles the shank where the shank meets the shoulder. In other embodiments, the apparatus is employed with a bearing, where the step is selected to provide a gap that allows the bearing to freely rotate while engaged with the aforementioned apparatus. In yet other embodiments, flat washers may have employed shoulder bearings that do not have steps for engaging a bearing and providing a gap that is allows the bearing to freely rotate while engaged with the shoulder washers.

A pulley and bearing assembly and a method of inserting and fastening a bearing within a pulley having an axially extending cylindrical hub portion with an axial bore forming an inner periphery of the pulley and a pair of opposite ends, an annular belt groove portion around an outer periphery of the pulley and annular disk shaped body portion extending radially between the hub and belt groove portion, the steps comprising: clamping the pulley in a fixed axial position, providing a bearing of a slightly larger outside diameter than the inside diameter of the bore of the hub, axially aligning the bearing with the bore of the hub, applying axial pressure to one side of the bearing to move it into the bore in a force fit therewith, and applying axial pressure simultaneously to both ends of the hub to crimp the ends of the hub around the bearing near its circumference to retain the bearing within the hub. An apparatus for performing the above described method is a vertical press having an annular crimping tooling assembly carried by the press and having upper and lower parts which are moved axially by the press to grip the pulley and insert the bearing in the hub of the pulley and crimp the hub around the bearing. An alternative to crimping the hub around the bearing, is the application of a layer of adhesive to one or both of the contacting surfaces of the bearing and the bore of the hub before inserting the bearing into the hub.

An electronically-controlled apparatus has a feed assembly for moving circular disk blank workpieces from a storage position to a pickup position where a pickup mechanism receives the workpiece and then carries it to an operational position within a machine tool which converts the workpiece into a pulley or like-type device while simultaneously the pickup mechanism receives a finished disk product and delivers it a collection device.

Automatic loader-unloader for disk blank workpieces

A machine has upper and lower die members which clamp a disk blank between them and maintain the disk blank axially on a machine vertical axis and planarly on a machine horizontal axis. The die members and disk blank are rotated via a main motor which drives one of the die members through a spur-ring gear configuration or directly along the machine vertical axis. Splitting and swaging tools are positioned to move along the machine horizontal axis to form the disk blank outer peripheral edge into a pulley groove while a splitting-swaging tool carried within a chamber formed by the die members splits and swages a disk blank bore to form upper and lower bearing retaining flanges. Various means for moving the splitting-swaging tool off of the machine vertical axis to a parallel axis are disclosed as well as various means for exact positioning of the disk blank axially on the machine vertical axis.

A hydraulic fluid Pressure-operated actuator comprises a first cylinder assembly having an output which operatively carries a second cylinder assembly such that an axial output force is effected from an output shaft of the second cylinder assembly, the output from the second cylinder assembly is a fast forward output stroke which is followed by a greatly increased high pressure force generated by the first cylinder assembly and effected through the output shaft of the second cylinder assembly.

Double action, dual speed and force hydraulic actuators

A device for tensioning the endless drive belt for vehicle accessories. A housing is mounted in a fixed position adjacent the drive belt. A shaft assembly is slidably mounted in an axial bore formed in the housing and includes a stub shaft portion extending outwardly from the housing through a slot formed in one of the housing walls. An idler pulley is rotatably mounted on the stub shaft and is moved into tensioning engagement with the drive belt by a compression coil spring which is adjustably mounted in the housing bore by a spring guide. The spring slidably moves the shaft assembly in a belt tensioning direction within the housing bore. Concavely curved surfaces are formed in certain areas of the shaft assembly within the housing. Roller means are interposed between and are biased by a spring into a wedging relationship with the curved shaft surfaces and adjacent housing walls. The roller means permits free movement of the shaft assembly and idler pulley in the belt tensioning direction while preventing movement of the shaft assembly in the opposite nontensioning direction because of the wedging action of the roller means. In another embodiment, the shaft is operatively connected to a pivotally mounted vehicle accessory whereupon sliding movement of the shaft pivots the accessory to tension the drive belt which is engaged with the accessory pulley.

Belt tensioner

A device for tensioning the endless drive belt for vehicle accessories. An L-shaped housing is mounted in a fixed position adjacent the drive belt. A stub shaft is slidably mounted on the housing and has an idler pulley rotatably mounted on an extended end of the shaft. A pair of cam plates having mutually engageable camming surfaces are slidably mounted in the housing. One of the plates is operatively engaged with the stub shaft and imparts sliding movement to the shaft for moving the idler pulley into tensioning engagement with the drive belt. A compression spring biases the camming plates into sliding engagement with each other moving the pulley toward tensioning engagement with the drive belt. The included angles of the cam plate camming surfaces equal 90.degree. with the angle of the camming surface of the stub shaft engaged cam plate being greater than the angle of the camming surface of the cam plate which is engaged by the tensioning spring whereby a greater force is required to move the pulley in a nontensioning direction than in the belt tensioning direction, achieving better damping and reduced vibration.

A device which maintains a predetermined tensioning force on the endless drive belt for vehicle accessories by use of a one-way clutch which prevents return of the tensioning means from its forwardmost tensioning position. In the preferred embodiment, a cylindrical shaft is mounted in a fixed position adjacent the drive belt. A roller clutch assembly is mounted on the shaft and includes an outer clutch housing rotatably mounted on the shaft. An outwardly extending lever is attached to the clutch housing and has an idler pulley rotatably mounted on the extended end of the lever. The pulley is moved into tensioning engagement with the drive belt by a torsional spring which is telescopically mounted on the shaft and clutch housing. The spring moves the pulley in a belt tensioning direction. The one-way clutch assembly preferably includes a roller clutch which consists of a plurality of rollers which are interposed between and are biased by a plurality of leaf springs into a wedging relationship with the shaft surface and ramps formed on a bearing cup. The rollers permit free movement of the clutch housing and attached lever in the belt tensioning direction while preventing movement of these components and associated idler pulley in the opposite nontensioning direction because of the wedging action of the rollers.
