A system and method for providing quantum entanglement as a service are described. Intermediate nodes which may be located in trusted or trustless locations are used to distribute quantum entanglement to endpoints, such as endpoints of customers of a quantum entanglement distribution service. The distributed quantum entanglement provides a secure communication path that does not rely on trust placed in an infrastructure or software provider. To distribute the quantum entanglement, intermediate nodes comprising quantum memories are used. Joint measurements are performed on quantum particles of respective entangled quantum pairs received at the intermediate nodes without collapsing superposition states of the particles. This allows for the quantum entanglement to be extended across intermediate nodes while maintaining entanglement and superposition of the entangled quantum particles.

Quantum entanglement distribution service

A self-aligned fabrication process for aligning photonic waveguide layers of a 3D photonic structure such that light may be efficiently transferred between the two layers is described. The self-aligned fabrication process comprises using a mask to pattern both photonic waveguide layers, such that they are aligned three-dimensionally via a single lithographic processing step, and thus fabricating a photonically coupled region of the 3D photonic structure. Selective etching may also be used to taper a given photonic waveguide layer for adiabatic coupling, and/or to produce other non-trivial geometric shapes in the photonic waveguide layers. Such 3D photonic structures may be fabricated for use in quantum memory devices, in which one of the photonic waveguide layers may host quantum memories and another photonic waveguide layer may interface with an optical fiber, such that light may be transferred between an optical fiber and respective ones of the quantum memories.

Self-aligned fabrication process for coupling of photonic waveguides

A packaged quantum memory device is described. The packaged quantum memory device comprises both quantum memories and quantum memory control devices within an outer package, such that the unit may be shipped, installed, and operated without opening the outer package to tune and/or operate the quantum memories. Optical and electrical control signals may be received from, or provided to, the internal components of the packaged quantum memory device via electrical and/or optical ports located on an outer package layer, and routed to the quantum memories via respective quantum memory control devices. Various electrical, optical, mechanical, and/or spin-related properties of the quantum memories may be tuned using the quantum memory control devices, as well as the local temperature and gas environments around the quantum memories. The packaged quantum memory device may be installed within a cryogenic cooling device, as a unit, and operated via the electrical and optical ports.

Portable quantum memory package for quantum network nodes

Systems and methods are disclosed for making a quantum network node. A plurality of scoring function F values are calculated for an array of at least two photonic crystal cavity unit cells, each having a lattice constant a and a hole having a length Hx and a width Hy. A value of a, a value of Hx, and a value of Hy are selected for which a scoring function value is at a maximum. A waveguide region and the array of at least two photonic crystal cavity unit cells based on the selected values are formed on a substrate. At least one ion between a first photonic crystal cavity unit cell and a second photonic crystal cavity unit cell are implanted and annealed into a quantum defect. A coplanar microwave waveguide is formed on the substrate in proximity to the array of at least two photonic crystal cavity unit cells.

Nanophotonic quantum memory

A system and method for providing quantum entanglement using a hybrid space-fiber quantum network are described. The hybrid space-fiber quantum network includes a communications hub located proximate to an optical ground station and also includes an aerial entangled particle source, such as an entangled photon source attached to a satellite, drone, aircraft, etc. An atmospheric or free-space channel is used to distribute quantum entanglement between optical ground stations that are separated by geographic distances, via the aerial entangled particle source. Also, fiber optic links are connected to the communications hub located proximate to the optical ground station. The communications hub includes optical switches that enable any of the fiber optic links connected to the communications hub to receive or send distributed quantum entanglement to a remotely located recipient endpoint via the atmospheric or free-space channel.

Hybrid space-fiber quantum networks for widespread entanglement distribution

Systems and methods are disclosed for preparing and evolving atomic defects in diamond. Silicon vacancy spins may be cooled to temperatures equal to or below 500 mK to reduce the influence of phonons. The cooling, manipulation, and observation systems may be designed to minimize added heat into the system. A CPMG sequence may be applied to extend coherence times. Coherence times may be extended, for example, to 13 ms.
