A method of calibrating a transmitter chain in a phased array system in which a lower guard band is assigned to a lower side of an operating carrier of a communication channel and an upper guard band is assigned an upper side of the operating carrier includes injecting a first calibration tone into the transmitter chain and detecting its arrival at the end of the transmitter chain, at which point a first detected calibration signal is generated. The first detected calibration signal and the injected first calibration tone are then compared to produce a first comparison signal. The transmitter chain's phase and/or gain is then adjusted based on this first comparison signal. The first calibration tone located within one of the lower and upper guard bands of the communication channel of the transmitter chain.

Non-disruptive phased array calibration for FDD and TDD communication systems

An electronic circuit including: a differential multiplier circuit with a first differential input and a second differential input and a differential output; and a phase locked loop (PLL) circuit including: (1) a balanced differential mixer circuit with a first differential input electrically connected to the differential output of the differential multiplier circuit, a second differential input, and an output; (2) a loop filter having an output and an input electrically connected to the output of the balanced differential mixer circuit; and (3) a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) circuit having an input electrically connected to the output of the loop filter and with an output electrically feeding back to the second differential input of the balanced differential mixer circuit.

Digital port expansion for hybrid massive MIMO systems

A method of calibrating a phased array including an array of antenna elements, RF communication circuits each of which is electrically coupled to a different corresponding antenna element within the array of antenna elements, and a signal feed network that electrically couples a first signal line to second signal lines, wherein each second signal line is electrically coupled to a different corresponding RF communication circuit among the RF communication circuits, the method involving: performing a first phase of a calibration operation, the first phase of the calibration operation involving calibrating the signal feed network independent of the RF communication circuits; and performing a second phase of the calibration operation, the second phase of the calibration operation involving calibrating, independent of the signal feed network, each of the RF communication circuits until all RF communication circuits among the RF communication circuits are calibrated.

Active array calibration

A method for communicating with a plurality of communication devices (UEs) using a phased array antenna system including an array of antenna elements, the method involving: receiving a plurality of port signal streams, wherein the plurality of port signal streams was obtained by precoding a plurality of data streams, each data stream of the plurality of data streams intended for a different corresponding UE; and within the phased array antenna system, processing the plurality of port signal streams to (1) undo the precoding that was performed on the plurality of data streams, and (2) generate via the array of antenna elements a plurality of transmit beams, wherein each transmit beam is directed towards a corresponding different UE among the plurality of UEs and carries a corresponding transmit signal that is derived exclusively from the data stream among the plurality of data streams that is intended for that UE.

Port-to-beam precoding to enable codebook based MU-MIMO operation in active antenna systems

A method involving a serial interconnection system having a first node, a second node, a plurality of calibration nodes that are electrically connected in series by the serial interconnection system, and a plurality of connection nodes corresponding to the plurality of serially connected calibration nodes and electrically connected in series by the serial interconnection system, the method involving: for each of the plurality of calibration nodes performing a measurement procedure involving: injecting a corresponding reference signal into that calibration node; and while the corresponding reference signal is being injected into that calibration node, determining a summation of the phases of signals appearing at the first and second nodes; from the determined phase summations for the plurality of calibration nodes, computing phase corrections for each of the plurality of calibration nodes; and applying the phase corrections to the corresponding plurality of connection nodes.

Distributing coherent signals to large electrical distances over serial interconnections

A method for calibrating a serial interconnection system having a first node, a second node, calibration nodes that are electrically connected in series by the serial interconnection system, and connection nodes corresponding to the serially connected calibration nodes, the connection nodes electrically connected in series by the serial interconnection system, the calibration method involving: for each of the calibration nodes performing a measurement procedure involving: injecting a corresponding reference signal into that calibration node; and while the corresponding reference signal is being injected into that calibration node, measuring the phase difference of signals appearing at the first and second nodes; from the measured phase differences for the calibration nodes, computing phase corrections for each of the calibration nodes; and applying the phase corrections computed for each of the calibration nodes to the corresponding connection nodes.

Calibrating a serial interconnection

Techniques for achieving high average spectrum efficiency in a wireless system are disclosed. In one particular embodiment, the techniques may be realized as a method of communicating with a wireless station comprising defining a plurality of beams to be generated by a beam-forming device, defining a set of beam groups wherein each beam group is a different subset of beams of the plurality of beams; repeatedly cycling through the set of beam groups by sequentially generating each group of beams among the set of beam groups; identifying a beam group among the set of beam groups which yields a best communication link with a wireless station; and scheduling communications with the wireless station to occur via the identified beam group when the identified beam group is being generated.
