A process and an apparatus for separating desired clathrate forming gases from a gas mixture containing the desired clathrate forming gases. The process includes providing a stream of the gas mixture, contacting the stream of the gas mixture with an aqueous solvent to form a solid clathrate hydrate suspension in the aqueous solvent. The forming of the solid clathrate hydrate suspension in the aqueous solution causing the gaseous stream to be thereafter leaner in the desired clathrate forming gases. The solid clathrate hydrate suspension and the aqueous solution are subjected to an elevated temperature and to a reduced pressure to produce a product gaseous stream which is richer in the desired clathrate forming gases.

Methods of making high activity transition metal catalysts

A catalyst particularly useful in conversion of CO--H.sub.2 mixtures is prepared by preparing an intimate mixture of a compound containing molybdenum, vanadium and/or tungsten or a mixture of two or more of the said molybdenum, vanadium, and tungsten compounds in a melt of ammonium thiocyanate-thiourea, or a mixture of the two, heating the melt in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at temperatures sufficient to evolve gases for a time to convert the melt to a solid mass, calcining the solid in an inert atmosphere to prevent over reduction, and then passivating the catalyst, after cooling with inert gas, with a very dilute stream containing oxygen, until no further exotherm is noted. The mass may be broken up, or ground and pelletized, in process as desired for convenience in handling, and the product is desirably further heated in this fashion.

Process for making high activity transition metal catalysts

It was previously found that a catalyst containing molybdenum and at least one element of the lanthanide or actinide groups or mixtures thereof, at a temperature of from 300.degree. C. to 600.degree. C. and a pressure of from 100 psig to 2,000 psig was a superior catalyst for the production of methane from a feed mixture containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide and gaseous compounds of sulfur. It has now been discovered that although the presence of alumina as an additional component had not been well characterized, it gives advantageous results when present in these methanation catalysts. Experimental data have shown that when alumina is added in small proportions to the molybdenum containing catalysts it results in further increased activity. Substantially the same temperatures, pressures and feed streams are used as in the process which does not employ the alumina in the catalysts.

A process for the production of methane or methane containing gas from a feed mixture containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and gaseous compounds of sulfur, by contacting said feed mixture with a solid catalyst having from 1% up to 99% by weight of molybdenum and from 99% to 1% by weight of at least one element of the lanthanide or actinide groups of elements or mixtures thereof, at a temperature of from about 300.degree. C. to 600.degree. C. and a pressure of from about 100 psig. to 2000 psig.
