A method for congestion management in a radio access network is provided. The radio network controller maintains available bandwidth information for each of the downstream links towards the base stations. The radio network controller also measures incoming traffic for each such link and for various traffic classes and uses the traffic measurements and available bandwidth to predict congestion conditions. Upon detecting a congestion condition, congestion avoidance mechanisms such as controlled discard and back-pressure are activated.

Congestion management in radio access networks

Methods and systems are provided for establishing a logical flow path between a radio network controller (RNC) having multiple call processors that are operable in a distributed manner and a base station, in particular a Node B, being served by the RNC using an internet protocol (IP) transport technology. In some embodiments a method comprises configuring of IP addresses to be used by the RNC and base station, establishing paths based on communication ports in the RNC and base station, performing cell initialization and establishing common channel paths between the RNC and base station. Methods described herein include a step for Node B attachment that can be added to a Node B and RNC installation phase that is current part of 3GPP standards as part of a 'plug and play' deployment method. The methods for Node B attachment to the network enable the Node B to be installed and dynamically registered with the RNC. The Node B obtains access to distributed call processing resources from the RNC over public and IP networks to offer services to UEs that the newly attached Node B serves.

Methods and systems for base station installation in distributed call processing networks

Multiple connections between switches that share the same Quality of Service (QoS) requirements are multiplexed onto a single virtual connection or switched path. The switched path may be established using a known standard or proprietary protocol, or even without knowledge of the underlying protocol. Provisioning and management software provided on the switches create originating and destination end points. When the network operator provisions an end point, a switched path call setup request is made to a networking interface which establishes a connection using a selected routing system through the network having the provisioned characteristics, such as bandwidth and QoS, of the switched path.

Method and system for multi-service cut-through switching through a connection-oriented network

A method of allocating bandwidth for transmitting upstream cells from a CPE unit to a BTS. The CPE determines arrival time information associated with each cell and sends arrival time information associated with at least one cell to the BTS. The BTS allocates future bandwidth to the CPE as a function of the arrival time information received from the CPE. For example, the BTS estimates the number of cell arrivals occurring in the current scheduling period based on past cell arrival times. The BTS then sends information to the CPE in which the allocated future bandwidth is specified. Finally, the CPE groups a number of cells into a burst packet occupying the allocated bandwidth and sends the burst packet to the BTS. Rather than respond in a delayed manner to a bandwidth deficiency or surplus at an individual CPE unit, the BTS produces an estimate of a CPE unit's bandwidth demands, resulting in more efficient bandwidth utilization and reduced cell loss ratio.
