It is an object of the present invention to provide a polarizing plate which has high productivity and can suppress water-induced unevenness, and a method for producing the same. A polarizing plate includes: a retardation film provided on one surface of a polarizer with an adhesive layer interposed therebetween; and a protective film provided on the other surface of the polarizer with an adhesive layer interposed therebetween. The retardation film contains a cellulose resin. After the polarizing plate is immersed in water at 23&#xb0; C. for 24 hours in a state where the polarizing plate is bonded to a glass plate, and taken out from the water, the polarizing plate has a dimensional change rate of 0.1% or less after 1 minute under an atmosphere of a temperature of 23&#xb0; C. and humidity of 55%.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a polarizing plate which can suppress display unevenness even when being incorporated into a liquid crystal display device, has neutral hue, and can maintain cross property even when a low water-vapor permeable protective film is used. It is another object of the present invention to provide a method for manufacturing the same. The polarizing plate includes: a polarizing film; an adhesive layer; and a protective film provided on at least one surface of the polarizing film with the adhesive layer interposed therebetween. A ratio (I/I) of absorbance Iof the polarizing film at 285 nm to absorbance Ithereof at 480 nm is 1.2 or less. The polarizing plate has a hue b value of 4 or less. Provided is a polarizer protective film, which has high heat resistance, high transparency, high optical characteristics, and high mechanical strength, and is excellent in adhesion with respect to a polarizer. Further, provided are a polarizing plate using such a polarizer protective film and a polarizer, which has high adhesion with respect to the polarizer protective film and the polarizer and is excellent in optical characteristics, and an image display apparatus of high quality using such a polarizing plate. A polarizer protective film according to the present invention includes a (meth)acrylic resin having a lactone ring structure and core-shell type nanoparticles having a core layer made of a rubber polymer and a shell layer made of a glass polymer.

A method for manufacturing a polarizing plate, the method comprising bonding a first transparent protective film and a second transparent protective film to both sides of a polarizer with an adhesive layer interposed between the polarizer and each of the first and second transparent protective films, wherein the first and second transparent protective films have different elasticities (elastic modulus&#xd7;thickness (&#x3bc;m)), the three films are pressure-bonded by being simultaneously allowed to pass between a pair of rolls, a direction in which the polarizer is fed and allowed to pass between the pair of rolls is inclined toward the high-elasticity film. The polarizing plate obtained by the method can be suppressed the occurrence of bubbles between the polarizer and the transparent protective films.

A polarizing plate of the present invention includes a polyvinyl alcohol-based polarizer; and transparent protective films provided on both sides of the polarizer with an adhesive layer interposed between the polarizer and each transparent protective film, wherein the transparent protective film on one side comprises a lactone ring structure-containing (meth)acrylic resin and has an in-plane retardation of less than 40 nm and a thickness direction retardation of less than 80 nm, and the transparent protective film on the other side is a retardation plate that comprises a cellulose ester and satisfies the relation: nx&#x3e;ny&#x3e;nz, wherein nx is a refractive index in an X-axis direction where the in-plane refractive index is maximum, ny is a refractive index in a Y-axis direction perpendicular to the X-axis, and nz is a refractive index in a Z-axis direction corresponding to the thickness direction. The polarizing plate can satisfy durability and display uniformity (unevenness).
