A sugar chain array containing a sugar chain immobilized thereon for detecting binding between an analyte and a sugar chain, and a sugar chain array having the sugar chain immobilized thereon that is capable of inhibiting non-specific adsorption and binding of an analyte without having to coat the array with an adsorption inhibitor. A specific sugar chain is immobilized on the array, and is useful for detecting binding between the sugar chain and an analyte, such as a pathogen of an infectious disease or an excretion thereof. In addition, in the array, when a base material is coated with a polymeric compound having a unit having a primary amino group, a unit for maintaining hydrophilicity, and a unit having a hydrophobic group, the sugar chain is immobilized efficiently and non-specific adsorption and binding of the analyte can be effectively inhibited.

An object of the present invention is to provide a simple method for fluorescent labeling of sugar chains, and a sugar chain capturing carrier used therein. According to the present invention, a sugar chain fluorescent labeling method is provided in which sugar chains are captured, recovered and purified by primary amino groups in a sugar chain capturing carrier having the primary amino groups that is used to capture sugar chains, and the captured sugar chains are released from the carrier and then labeled with a fluorescent substance including aromatic amine at a concentration of 0.5 mol/L or more.

The method of labeling a sugar chain from a biological sample employs a single reaction vessel for the sequential performance of the following steps of (a) isolating a sugar chain from a sample using a sugar-trapping substance; (b) washing the sugar-trapping substance having the sugar chains trapped thereon; (c) releasing the sugar chain from the sugar-trapping substance; and (d) labeling the released sugar chain with UV/visible or fluorescent compound having an amino group forming a stable labeled sugar in fewer steps than a conventional ion exchange based technique.
