Disclosed herein is a lens for a wearable projection system. The lens includes a holographic optical element disposed between layers of the lens. Joints between the holographic optical element and the lens layers on an edge of the lens are covered with a sealant to protect the holographic optical element.

Holographic optical elements for augmented reality (AR) devices and methods of manufacturing and using the same are disclosed. An example AR device includes a holographic optical element (HOE) including a recorded optical function, and a projector to emit light toward the HOE. The HOE reflects the light based on the optical function to produce a full image corresponding to content perceivable by a user viewing the reflected light from within an eyebox. A first portion of the content is viewable from a first location within the eyebox. A second portion of the content is viewable from a second location within the eyebox. The first portion including different content than the second portion that is non-repeating between the first and second portions.

Holographic optical elements for augmented reality devices and methods of manufacturing and using the same

Disclosed herein is a lens for a wearable projection system. The lens includes a holographic optical element embedded within the lens and covering a portion of the viewable area of the lens. The lens can be manufactured by filling a cavity in a lens blank with a photosensitive material and exposing the photosensitive material to a number of light beams to form the HOE.

Method to manufacture lens having embedded holographic optical element for near eye display

Disclosed herein are devices and methods to provide a holographic optical element (HOE) having a modified shape and a structural attribute. At least one wavefront may be used to cause a first structure change in a material, used for the HOE, in a first shape. The material used for the HOE may be changed from the first shape to the modified shape to cause a second structure change in the material. The structural attribute in the material may be provided from a combination of the first structure change and the second structure change.

Holographic optical element design and manufacturing

Disclosed herein is a lens for a wearable projection system. The lens includes a holographic optical element embedded within the lens and covering a portion of the viewable area of the lens. The lens can be manufactured by providing a first lens blank, affixing the HOE to a portion of the first lens blank, and forming a second lens blank on the first lens blank to embed the HOE between the lens blanks.

Lens and embedded optical element for near eye display

Disclosed herein are devices and methods to provide multiple eyeboxes from multiple input pupils. In particular, a projection system can direct light from multiple input pupils to a holographic optical element. The light of each of the input pupils having light beams of different wavelengths. The holographic optical element reflects at least part of the light of the multiple input pupils to form an array of exit pupils.

Spatially separated exit pupils in a head mounted display

Various embodiments are generally directed to techniques for processing holographic recording media. Some embodiments are particularly directed to processing a raw holographic recording medium into an apodized holographic recording medium. For example, a raw holographic recording medium may include a plurality of photosensitive molecules uniformly distributed throughout that are able to record an interference pattern to create a hologram. However, when a photosensitive molecule is desensitized, such as by exposure to incoherent light, its photosensitivity is lost and the molecule may no longer be able to record an interference pattern of coherent light. Various embodiments described herein may include an apodized holographic recording medium that has been exposed to incoherent light in a manner to desensitize some photosensitive molecules therein such that the remaining photosensitive molecules have a non-uniform distribution.

Techniques for processing holographic recording media

Disclosed herein are devices and methods to provide a display including a projection system and a removable lenses including a holographic optical element to receive light and reflect the light to an exit pupil. Each of the removable lenses may comprise a holographic optical element in a different position of the lens to change the position of the exit pupil. The projection system may project an image onto the holographic optical element to project the image to the exit pupil.

Adjustable pupil distance wearable display

A head worn display (HWD) includes a projection system, which projection system in turn may include: a projection surface including a holographic optical element (HOE) centered at a first location; a projector to project light onto a projection area of the projection surface; and a controller to send a control signal to the projector to cause the projector to project an image onto a location shifted from the first location based on a misalignment of a user's line of sight with the first location.

A method for displaying an image viewable by an eye, the image being projected from a portable head worn display, comprises steps of: emitting a plurality of light beams of wavelengths that differ amongst the light beams; directing the plurality of light beams to a scanning mirror; modulating in intensity each one of the plurality of light beams in accordance with intensity information provided from the image, whereby the intensity is representative of a pixel value within the image; scanning the plurality of light beams in two distinct axes with the scanning mirror to form the image; and redirecting the plurality of light beams to the eye using a holographic optical element acting as a reflector of the light beams, whereby the redirecting is dependent on the wavelength of the light beam, to create for each light beam an exit pupil at the eye that is spatially separated from the exit pupils of the other light beams.
