Methods for cementing a subterranean well and maintaining zonal isolation involve preparing a cement slurry that contains water, an inorganic cement and an expanding agent. The slurry is placed in the annular region between casing and the formation or between two casing strings. After the cement sets, the expanding agent reacts and causes the set cement to be in a state of compression within the annular region. The casing dimensions may fluctuate in response to a temperature change, a pressure change, a mechanical disturbance resulting from a well intervention, or mud contamination or a combination thereof. The expanding agent may further react and maintain a state of compression within the annular region. The state of compression in the annular region may be monitored by acoustic impedance measurements.

Compositions and methods for well cementing

Methods to prepare a well cementing slurry include coating particles comprising an expanding agent with a component selected from the group consisting of a phenolic resin, a silica, a calcination product of a polysiloxane oil, and a combination thereof; and combining the coated particles with mix water and hydraulic cement to form a cement slurry for cementing a well.

Slurry comprising an encapsulated expansion agent for well cementing

Pre-stressed cementing methods involve preparing a cement slurry containing water, inorganic cement, and capsules of an expanding agent. The slurry is placed in an annular region in the well and hardened. Expansion of the set cement is delayed. Water infiltration activates the expanding agent to rupture the capsules and release the expanding agent. The expanding agent reacts to expand the set cement to a state of compression within the annular region. The state of compression can be maintained during changes in casing dimensions from temperature or pressure, mechanical disturbance, or mud contamination. The state of compression in the annular region may be monitored by acoustic impedance measurements.

Release of expansion agents for well cementing

Methods may include pumping a cement composition containing one or more conductive fillers into an annular region of a wellbore created between a casing and a surface of the wellbore, allowing the cement composition to cure, emplacing a tool for measuring at least one electromagnetic property into the wellbore, and measuring at least one of the cemented casing and the formation. In another aspect, methods may include preparing a cement composition containing one or more conductive fillers, allowing the cement composition to set, and measuring at least one electromagnetic property of the set cement. In yet another aspect, cement compositions may contain a cement, one or more conductive fillers, and a surfactant, wherein the resistivity of the cement composition is less than 10 &#x3a9;*m.

Piezoresistive cement nanocomposites

Embodiments of the present invention provide compositions and methods for lining a wellbore. In certain aspects, the compositions and methods comprise providing a fluid composition that is solidifiable or gellable on exposure to actinic radiation of a predetermined wavelength at the wall of open-hole wellbore and providing actinic radiation at the predetermined wavelength to solidify or gel the composition. The predetermined wavelength lies in a range from 100 nm to 1500 nm.

Embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods for lining a wellbore. In certain aspects, the systems and methods comprise providing a fluid composition that is solidifiable or gellable on exposure to actinic radiation of a predetermined wavelength at the wall of open-hole wellbore and providing actinic radiation at the predetermined wavelength to solidify or gel the composition. The predetermined wavelength lies in a range from 100 nm to 1500 nm.

The invention discloses an apparatus () comprising: a setting section () surrounded by a first sleeve (), said first sleeve being expandable and impermeable to a material; an inflating means () for inflating said first sleeve, said inflating means ensuring that the first sleeve can be in contact with a first zone () of a tube () which is permeable to said material, so that said first zone of said tube becomes impermeable to said material; and further comprising a second sleeve portion () partially permeable to said material on a second zone (A') and attached to said first sleeve so that: a path () is provided between said first sleeve and said second sleeve portion and so that, when the first sleeve is inflated the second zone can be in contact with said tube allowing the material to flow in the path and through the second zone. Also, the invention discloses the associated method for treatment of a near zone and/or a far zone of a well with the disclosed apparatus.

Method and apparatus to cement a perforated casing

Wellbore strengthening during drilling may be achieved by including chemicals in the drilling fluid that can be polymerised when exposed to microwave energy. Selected chemicals are mixed with the drilling fluid but do not react with it. The chemicals concentrate in a filter cake on the borehole wall during drilling-fluid circulation. A tool, which comprises a microwave source, is used to trigger polymerisation or crosslinking reactions within the filter cake. The polymerisation or crosslinking reactions cause the formation of a film or gel that strengthens the wellbore.

Embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods for lining a wellbore. In certain aspects, the systems and methods comprise providing a fluid composition that is solidifiable or gellable on exposure to actinic radiation of a predetermined wavelength at the wall of open-hole wellbore and providing actinic radiation at the predetermined wavelength to solidify or gel the composition.

The invention provides an apparatus to be lowered in a borehole, comprising: (i) a delivery section for delivering a plugging fluid; (ii) a setting section comprising a longitudinal element and a flexible and permeable sleeve into which the plugging fluid is delivered; and (iii) a disconnect mechanism to allow the delivery section to be disconnected from the setting section, characterized in that the flexible sleeve is connected by at least one floating means to the longitudinal element. Additionally, the invention provides a method of installing a plug in a borehole, comprising: positioning the apparatus as described above in the borehole at a position at which the plug is to be installed, pumping fluid into the flexible sleeve via the delivery section so as to inflate the flexible sleeve, disconnecting the setting section from the delivery section, pumping an excess of the fluid into the borehole above the plug and withdrawing the delivery section from the borehole leaving the setting section at the position, said setting section acting as the plug.

A method and apparatus for estimating the time varying mechanical properties of a cement including propagating acoustic waves through a cement sample, measuring signals corresponding to the acoustic waves after they propagate in the sample, comparing attributes from the measured signals with corresponding attributes provided by a model accounting for at least initially estimated acoustic properties of the cement, using the differences between the measured and calculated signals to update the initially estimated acoustic properties of the material in the calculating model, using the differences between the measured and calculated signals, updating the initial acoustic properties in the model, processing N iterations of the comparison and updating either until the differences between measured and calculated signals are within a given tolerance factor or when the number i reaches a prescribed maximum and calculating the time varying mechanical properties of the cement from the final iterated acoustic properties.
