An inflation portion of an airbag, which is inflated by inflation gas, is partitioned into an upstream inflation portion and a downstream inflation portion via a partition member. When being tensioned in a planar manner, the partition member has a length in a longitudinal direction that is longer than a length in a transverse direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction. A pressure regulating valve that is closed at an early stage of a supply period of the inflation gas to the inflation portion and is opened from the middle of the supply period includes a slit-like inner opening that is provided on the partition member and extends in the transverse direction and a pair of valve body portions that are provided around the inner opening and are selectively positioned close to and separated from each other.

Airbag apparatus

The airbag has a front portion, in which a front chamber is formed, a rear portion, in which a rear chamber is formed, and a partition, which partitions the front and rear chambers from each other. The partition has a communication passage for connecting the front and rear chambers to communicate to each other. A pressure regulating valve is located in the passage. At an early stage of a supply period during which an inflator supplies inflation gas to the airbag, the valve is closed to restrict flow of the inflation gas from the rear chamber to the front chamber via the passage. The valve is opened during the supply period to permit the inflation gas to flow therethrough. A front portion of the airbag is roll-folded, while a rear portion is accordion-folded. The airbag front portion and the airbag rear portion are located in front of the inflator.

Side airbag apparatus

A wrapping sheet is to be torn by the inflation of an air bag. Since attachment shafts, used to hold the folded air bag in position, are projected from the air bag, an engagement portion of the wrapping sheet is fitted on the attachment shafts, and the shape of a folding completed body of the air bag is maintained. The wrapping sheet includes not only the engagement portion, but also a coupled portion to be connected to the air bag, and a folding form control portion, which has an auxiliary engagement portion to be fitted on the attachment shafts. When the auxiliary engagement portion is fitted on the attachment shafts, the shape of the air bag that is being folded is adjusted.

An inflator for an air bag, includes, a tubular housing including a gas discharge portion, a first fixing member provided in an outer circumferential surface of the tubular housing for fixing the inflator to a vehicle, the first fixing member including a contacting surface fixed to the outer circumferential surface, and a non-contacting surface extending in a direction tangential to the outer circumferential surface from one end of the first fixing member without contacting the outer circumferential surface. The first fixing member has a rib that extends from the contacting surface to the non-contacting surface.

Inflator for air bag

A head protecting airbag is folded up to be housed at an upper part of a window of a vehicle so as to be deployed and inflated downward from the upper part of the window so as to cover an interior side of the window. In the airbag, a plurality of parallel cells adapted to be deployed and inflated by an inflating gas introduced thereinto are provided in parallel with each other below a gas supply passage portion in which the inflating gas flows along a longitudinal direction. In a cell of the parallel cells so provided which is required to deploy quickly, of front and rear partitioning portions, a partitioning portion situated at an upstream side of the gas flowing in the gas supply passage portion is provided such that an end thereof which extends upward from a lower edge portion is disposed so as to form an inlet port between a distal end of a horizontal portion of a downstream side partitioning portion and itself.

An air bag system for a navigator's or passenger's seat includes a casing with an opening arranged in an instrument panel below an inclined windshield. An air bag, having a gas inlet port and accommodated in a folded shape in the casing, is held at the peripheral edge of the gas inlet port by the casing. When inflated, the air bag will extend a great distance toward the passenger's seat and will also interfere with the windshield. The inflator is arranged in the casing for feeding the gases to the gas inlet port of the air bag which is offset from the center of one of the base cloths, and the opening of the casing is covered but opens upon inflation. The air bag is shaped by sewing the peripheral edges of two circular base cloths.
