It is intended to provide thermotolerant and antimicrobial proteins having a broad antibacterial spectrum and being useful in the agricultural, medical and industrial field; and plants resistant to pathogenic microorganisms. Namely, DNAs comprising the base sequences represented by SEQ ID NOS: 1 to 5 respectively; antimicrobial proteins encoded by these DNAs; and fungicides, antibacterial agents and antibacterial/antifungal agents for industrial use comprising the antimicrobial proteins as the active ingredient.

A method for protection of a plant from damage caused by an insect pest of the order Lepidoptera and Diptera is disclosed. An insect controlling agent having an active component of an insecticidal crystal toxin produced by Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki No. 145 FERM BP-3905, No. 161 FERM BP-3906, and No. 116 FERM BP-3907 is used in the method for protection of a plant. The insecticidal crystal toxin has a set of molecular weights as determined by 10% SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of 125,000 daltons and 60,000 daltons when produced by No. 145, 130,000 daltons and 60,000 daltons when produced by No. 161, and 130,000 daltons and 60,000 daltons when produced by No. 116.

The present invention relates to the compound A of the formula (A), the related compound B, carboxylic acid derived from acid anhydride group of these compounds and esters and salts thereof, microorganisms for producing the compounds, methods for producing the compounds A and/or B by using the microorganisms, and a treated or untreated fermentation broth obtained by culturing strains belonging to genus Zopfiella or Zopfiella curvata No. 37-3 strain. ##STR1## The present invention provides the compounds A and B, derivatives thereof, and treated or untreated fermentation broth obtained by culturing the strains belonging to genus Zopfiella or Zopfiella curvata No. 37-3 strain, which show an excellent activities as antifungal agent and anti-thrombotic agent.
