A fuel for a fuel cell system, which comprises at least 5 vol. % of hydrocarbons based on the whole fuel and 0.5 to 20 mass % of oxygenates in terms of an oxygen content based on the whole fuel, wherein the total content of hydrocarbon compounds which have carbon numbers of 7 and 8 is 20 vol. % or more based on the whole hydrocarbons and the total content of hydrocarbon compounds which have carbon numbers of 10 or more is 20 vol. % or less based on the whole hydrocarbons, and a fuel for a fuel cell system, which comprises at least 5 vol. % of hydrocarbons based on the whole fuel and 0.5 to 20 mass % of oxygenates in terms of an oxygen content based on the whole fuel, wherein the fuel has distillation properties; the initial boiling point in distillation of over 40&#xb0; C. and 100&#xb0; C. or lower, the 10 vol. % distillation temperature of over 50&#xb0; C. and 120&#xb0; C. or lower, the 90 vol. % distillation temperature of 110&#xb0; C. or higher and 180&#xb0; C. or lower, and the final boiling point in distillation of 130&#xb0; C. or higher and 210&#xb0; C. or lower. The fuel for a fuel cell system has a high power generation quantity per weight, a high power generation quantity per COemission, a low fuel consumption, a small quantity of evaporative gas (evapo-emission), small deterioration of a fuel cell system comprising such as a reforming catalyst, a water gas shift reaction catalyst, a carbon monoxide removal catalyst, fuel cell stacks and the like to maintain the initial performances for a long duration, good handling properties in view of storage stability and inflammability, and a low preheating energy.

The present invention relates to a fuel for a fuel cell system comprising 5 vol. % or more of hydrocarbons based on the whole fuel, and 0.5-20 mass % of oxygenates in terms of an oxygen content based on the whole fuel, wherein the content of hydrocarbon compounds having a carbon number of 4 is 15 vol. % or less, the content of hydrocarbon compounds having a carbon number of 5 is 5 vol. % or more, the content of hydrocarbon compounds having a carbon number of 6 is 10 vol. % or more, the content of hydrocarbon compounds having carbon numbers of 7 and 8 in total is 20 vol. % or more, and the content of hydrocarbon compounds having carbon numbers of 10 or more is 20 vol. % or less.

Fuel for use in fuel cell

A continuous process for the production of a solvent for use in the liquefaction of coal is described. The process comprises hydrogenating a mixture of 100 parts by weight of a hydrocarbon mixture and from 0.2 to 10 parts by weight of phenol and/or alkylphenol. The hydrocarbon mixture contains at least 50% by weight of a polycyclic (from tricyclic to pentacyclic) aromatic hydrocarbon or its alkyl derivative. The hydrocarbon mixture is distilled away in a proportion of at least 80% when heated at a temperature of from 320.degree. to 550.degree. C. The hydrogenation of the hydrocarbon mixture and phenol and/or alkylphenol may be carried out with or without the addition of from 0.05 to 0.5% by weight (calculated as sulfur) of an easily desulfurizable sulfur compound in a high temperature and pressure hydrogen atmosphere in the presence of a catalyst containing the sulfide(s) of Group VIII metal and/or Group VI metal of the Periodic Table to prepare a partially hydrogenated product resulting from the partial hydrogenation of the aromatic ring of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon or its alkyl derivative.
