A map distribution system includes a map distribution server that distributes map data to a navigation device. The server includes a first table having entries that each include update data in correspondence with an ID for the update data and an ID for each other update data upon which the update data depends, a second table having entries that each include an area ID of an area of the map data in correspondence with a version of the area and the ID for each update data that is applied in the version of the area, and an update manager that refers to the second table to select the ID for each update data required for updating an area selected based on input from the navigation device and the required ID for each other update data upon which any update data required for updating the area selected depends.

In order to quickly update map data in region units without generation of contradiction to adjacent non-updated regions after the updating, under map data updating, time and date of updating of update region of a terminal is obtained with designation of a region as the update object used as a trigger, a mesh ID on the external boundary of the partial update region is obtained, and the differential updating data ID of the updated differential updating data is also obtained from the terminal. The partial updating data and differential updating data required for updating of the designated region of the terminal are selected from the information obtained above and these selected data are applied to the map data of terminal. When updating is conducted using the partial updating data and differential updating data, the time and date of updating of the relevant partial update region ID are changed and the differential updating data ID is registered to the differential management data.

A navigation device includes a navigation information storage unit in which navigation information, including the user-provided data, is stored; and a human machine interface unit that outputs the user-provided data and navigation information other than the user-provided data separately on an output device, that displays a warning message, read from the navigation information storage unit, and a screen prompting for an input for selecting whether to perform navigation processing based on the user-provided data when an instruction for performing navigation processing based on the user-provided data is input from an input device, and that causes a control unit, which performs navigation processing, to perform navigation processing based on the user-provided data when an instruction for performing navigation processing based on the user-provided data is input from the input device. In a communication-type navigation system for downloading map data according to the present invention, a reduction in the amount of map information to be transferred, correction of a position measured by a GPS, and delivery of advertisements are effected. In this system, a terminalstores rough map data in advance. Then, when detailed map data is required, it is downloaded from a map data delivery center to the terminal. Further, together with the map data, GPS correction information is delivered to the terminalfrom the map data delivery center. Still further, coupon information associated with an advertisement is displayed and an electronic mail on the coupon information is issued, by the map data delivery center.
