A projection display apparatus includes: a display element that displays an image; a lamp that illuminates the display element to cause the display element to emit an image light; a variable light intensity element that allows the light emitted from the lamp to pass therethrough, the intensity of light passing through the variable light intensity element being variable; and a light intensity controller that determines whether the display element is at an image mute state in which a full-black image is displayed, or at a normal lighting state other than the image mute state, and when the display element is at the image mute state, reduces the amount of power supplied to the lamp to a level that is lower than that of the normal lighting state to decrease the intensity of light emitted from the lamp, and also decreases the intensity of light that passes through the variable light intensity element.

Video display apparatus and afterimage correcting method

A field delay circuit aligns the phases of two field signals. An average value calculation circuit generates an average value signal of the two field signals. This average value signal can be regarded as a signal that has undergone a one-dimensional low-pass filter process in the row direction in which the number of taps for a progressive signal is 2 and the filter coefficient for each tap is 0.5 and that has then been thinned to one-half the data. A two-dimensional LPF circuit subjects this average value signal to a low-pass filter process and eliminates the high-frequency components (edge components). A subtraction circuit subtracts the average value signal that has undergone the LPF process from each field signal and thus extracts the edge components of each field signal. An amplification circuit multiplies the edge components of each field signal by a prescribed factor. An addition circuit adds the resulting amplified edge components to each field signal.

Picture quality improvement device and picture quality improvement method

An average value signal of the G two-phase input signal is generated by means of an average value calculation circuit. This average value signal is regarded as a signal in which a one-dimensional low-pass filter process, in which the number of taps is 2 and the filter coefficient for each tap is 0.5, has been carried out for a single-phase signal and the number of items of data then thinned to one half. A two-dimensional LPF circuit next subjects this average value signal to a low-pass filter process to eliminate the high-frequency component (edge component). The average value signal that has undergone the low-pass filter process is then subtracted from the input signal of each phase to extract the edge component of the input signal of each phase. An amplification circuit then multiplies the edge component of the input signal of each phase by a prescribed factor, and an addition circuit next adds this multiplied edge component to the input signal of each phase. The above-described processes emphasize the edges of a video picture that is realized by a two-phase signal and thus realize flare correction.

A single-plate color projector includes a color wheel for chromatically separating light emitted from a light source in time series. An image forming device optically modulates each separated color light in sequence. A driving mechanism rotates the color wheel in a circumferential direction. A reflective marker is rotated together with the color wheel. A detector circuit detects movement of the reflective marker to generate a signal. A driving mechanism control circuit drives the driving mechanism in synchronization with the signal generated by the detector circuit. An image forming device control circuit drives the image forming device in synchronization with the signal generated by the detector circuit, and a time adjusting mechanism moves either the reflective marker or the detector circuit or both the reflective marker and the detector circuit to change a relative positional relationship therebetween.

A picture quality improvement device has two-dimensional low-pass filter that takes as input a luminance signal YIN that is obtained from a video signal and that extracts low-pass components for a vertical direction and a horizontal direction of the input luminance signal YIN. The picture quality improvement device adds an edge signal, which is obtained by subtracting from luminance signal YIN the low-pass extraction signal (LPF) that has been extracted by two-dimensional low-pass filter, to luminance signal YIN. Device and method for improving picture quality

A picture quality improving apparatus which is low in cost and small in circuit scale has a vertical low-pass filter (LPF) for extracting a vertical low-frequency component from an input luminance signal, a horizontal LPF for extracting a horizontal low-frequency component from the output signal from the vertical LPF, a subtractor for subtracting the output signal from the horizontal LPF from the luminance signal which has been compensated for the delay, a gain adjusting circuit for adjusting the gain of an edge signal produced by the subtractor, and an adder for adding the edge signal whose gain has been adjusted to the delay-compensated luminance signal.
