An optical component includes a multicore optical fiber and an I/O optical fiber. The multicore optical fiber has longitudinally extending cores within a common cladding. The cores are arranged on a circumference of a circle centered at a fiber axis in an end face of the multicore optical fiber. Both end faces of the multicore optical fiber are connected to each other such that the cores of the multicore optical fiber are optically connected to each other. Both end faces of the multicore optical fiber are adapted to rotate relative to each other about the fiber axis.

An optical combiner in which the number of parts used is lessened is made of a resin. The optical component comprises a first surface, a diffraction grating, and a second surface. The first surface is a surface providing first, second, and third lenses. The diffraction grating diffracts to a common optical path leading to the second surface light of the first wavelength incident on the first lens, light of the second wavelength incident on the second lens, and light of the third wavelength incident on the third lens. The second surface emits light incident thereon through the common optical path. The present invention relates a variable optical multiplexer/demultiplexer which can be made smaller and can restrain characteristics from deteriorating. The optical multiplexer/demultiplexer comprises a first optical system, a wavelength branching device, a second optical system, and an optical path changing part. The optical multiplexer/demultiplexer has a plurality of input/output ports, and the first optical system, the wavelength branching device, and the second optical system are disposed between the ports and the optical path changing part. When light is fed into any of the ports, individual wavelength components included in the light are outputted from any of the ports. The optical path changing part inputs the wavelength components condensed by the second optical system, and output the wavelength components to an output optical path which is parallel to but not on the same line as the input optical paths of the wavelength components.
