A panel-type input device including a pair of electrode plates, each electrode plate having a substrate and a conductive coat provided on a surface of the substrate, the conductive coat of each electrode plate being formed from a conducting polymer. The conductive coat of each electrode plate includes a detecting area adapted to detect a touch input and an inoperative area disposed adjacent to the detecting area, the inoperative area having a surface resistivity higher than a surface resistivity of the detecting area. A parallel electrode pair adapted to apply a voltage to the conductive coat is formed in the detecting area, and conductors connected to the parallel electrode pair are formed in the inoperative area. The inoperative area insulates the conductors from the detecting area.

An improved coordinates input apparatus for designating a particular set of coordinates in three-dimensional space has a substantially box-like frame, a first magnet, a second magnet, and a plurality of magnetoelectric transducers. The first magnet and second magnet are mounted on the frame and disposed so that sides thereof having identical magnetic poles are disposed opposite each other. The second magnet is disposed so as to be tiltable in response to a disposition of forces acting thereupon. The forces include a repulsive force arising between the first magnet and the second magnet and a pressing force exerted on the second magnet. The plurality of magnetoelectric transducers mounted on the frame opposite the second magnet and output voltage values that vary according to a change in a gap between the magnetoelectric transducers and the second magnet, such that the voltage values indicate a set of X,Y coordinates in two-dimensional space.

The forces include a repulsive force arising between the first magnet and the second magnet and a pressing force exerted on the second magnet. A plurality of magnetoelectric transducers are disposed opposite the second magnet and surrounding the gap, and produce output voltages having values that vary according to a change in the gap between the magnetoelectric transducers and the second magnet, such that the differential voltage values of the transducer outputs indicate a set of X,Y coordinates in two-dimensional space.
