To avoid engine idling to support cabin heating, an auxiliary coolant heater can heat engine coolant and pump it through compartment heaters or the engine cooling system. The coolant flow control system provides great flexibility in selectively distributing heated coolant for heating and engine preheating.

A heating, ventilation and air conditioning system for a vehicle is constructed from two modules, one for the engine compartment and a second for the passenger compartment. The engine compartment module has a base formed for positioning on at least two locations on a dash panel, a outside air inlet, a secondary air inlet for communication with the passenger compartment, an air outlet and defining a air transport conduit connecting the outside air inlet or the secondary air inlet with the air outlet. Downstream from the engine compartment is a passenger compartment module having a slide slot for a heater core, an inlet for communication with the air outlet from the engine compartment module, an air manifold, a panel exhaust from the air manifold, a defrost exhaust from the air manifold, a compartment door providing access to the slide in friction slot, and an air channel from the inlet to the air manifold. The heater core is positioned in the slide in slot.

Vehicle heating and air conditioning modules

A tubing coupler for mechanically and fluidly connecting two pieces of tubing. The tubing coupler has a first body portion with a pilot and a second body portion with a cavity in which the pilot is disposed when the tubing coupler is assembled. A fluid passageway through the first body portion and the pilot of the first body portion is in fluid communication with a fluid passageway through the second body portion and the cavity of the second body portion. Thus fluid flow is allowed through the coupler. A primary sealing device circumscribes the pilot of the first body portion and seals the space between the pilot of the first body portion and the cavity of the second body portion. A plate is disposed between the first body portion and the second body portion and defines an opening through itself through which the pilot of the first body portion protrudes. A secondary sealing device is disposed inside the periphery of the opening in the plate and surrounds a portion of the pilot. The secondary sealing device is elastically compressed between the first body portion and second body portion and acts as a back up for the primary seal.

A reusable hose separating clip comprises an elongate one piece plastic unit including a living hinge centrally located along the length thereof. The hinge forms two clip halves thereabout which are substantially mirror images of one another except for the latching structure at the free end of each half. Each hinge half includes arcuate areas separated by flats, with corresponding arcuate areas on the clip halves defining circular channels therebetween for engaging hoses therein when the clip halves are pivoted together about the hinge and the latch structures are engaged. When the clip halves are engaged, the corresponding flats are spaced from one another to allow for use with oversized or swelled hoses.
