Electronic mail software includes a main email component and a number of installable components which communicate bidirectionally with the email component through an application programming interface (API). The installable components include authoring/reading components and a mailbox browser/editor component. The main email component provides an underlying graphical user interface (GUI) for functions directly associated with the storage and transfer of electronic mail messages and also handles all data bundling and unbundling that may be required to transform a message created by an authoring component into a fully MIME compliant message. In addition, the main email component includes 'hooks' (an application programming interface or API) for the attachment of the installable components. The authoring/reading components each provide functionality particular to the type of document the component is designed to create/display. Some modular components, or messages created by them, have assigned 'roles' whereby senders and recipients of certain email documents are provided different kinds of access to the documents.

Electronic mail software includes a main email component and a number installable components. The installable components include authoring/reading components for creating/reading different kinds of documents and mailbox components for listing different kinds of messages or for listing messages in different styles. The main email component provides an underlying graphical user interface for functions directly associated with the storage and transfer of electronic mail messages, and also handles all data bundling and unbundling required to transform a message created by an authoring component into a MIME compliant message. The authoring/reading components act like applications embedded within the email program and allow specific types of documents such as spreadsheets, graphics, databases, etc. to be created from within the email program and emailed directly. The authoring/reading components also allow received documents to be read without the difficulties traditionally associated with attaching binary files to an email letter. The authoring components of the invention pass data to the main email component which packages the data as a MIME compliant message. When the message is received, the main email component concatenates and decodes the MIME message and sends the data to the authoring/reading component associated with the MIME type.

Electronic mail software with modular integrated authoring/reading software components

Electronic mail client software has a mailbox displayer which lists messages together with an icon for each message where the icon is associated with the MIME type of the message. Mail which contains a file attachment is listed in the inbox with an icon indicative of the type of file attached to the email. The mailbox displayer interprets the MIME type and selects the appropriate icon either from the icon registry in the OS or from a directory of icons maintained by the email client software. The mailbox displayer component preferably includes all of the functionality of state-of-the-art mailbox displayers and includes the functionality of looking to a directory of icons for display with information about the message based on the MIME type and subtype of the message. If there is no appropriate icon in the directory of icons, the mailbox displayer uses icon image data contained in a subpart of the MIME message if it is available. Otherwise, no icon or a generic icon is used. According to the presently preferred embodiment, a type table is maintained by a type updater component. The type table includes a list of message types and subtypes together with filenames of scalable icons to be used by the mailbox displayer.

Enhanced electronic mail system including methods and apparatus for identifying mime types and for displaying different icons

A pictorial user interface for accessing information in an electronic file system provides a pictorial image which is linked to a file directory and which identifies the file directory. Objects in the pictorial image are icons linked to file objects and an animated character is overlaid on the pictorial image. User input causes movement of the animated character relative to the pictorial image. Input from the user is preferably through a limited input device such as a gamepad controller, a mouse, or by using a limited number of keys on a normal keyboard. Input signals are mapped according to keycode identical command sets, context arguments and selection arguments. Commands that can be invoked by the user include operating system commands, pictorial object commands, and interface utility commands. Using the pictorial object commands, the user can configure the interface so that different pictures and icons are associated with different directories and files. Commands are executed with a prologue animation and an epilogue animation. The prologue animation provides feedback as to the nature of the command being executed. The epilogue animation provides feedback as to the results of the command. Animations may include actions of the animated character or the behaviour of a selected icon, or both. The interface may be applied as an overlay to virtually any operating system.

Pictorial interface for accessing information in an electronic file system

Diagnostic systems utilizing a bayesian network model having link weights updated experientially include an algorithm for easily quantifying the strength of links in a Bayesian network, a method for reducing the amount of data needed to automatically update the probability matrices of the network on the basis of experiential knowledge, and methods and algorithms for automatically collecting knowledge from experience and automatically updating the Bayesian network with the collected knowledge. A practical exemplary embodiment provides a trouble ticket fault management system for a communications network. The exemplary embodiment is particularly appropriate for utilizing the automatic learning capabilities of the invention. In the exemplary embodiment, a communications network is represented as a Bayesian network where devices and communication links are represented as nodes in the Bayesian network. Faults in the communications network are identified and recorded in the form of a trouble ticket and one or more probable causes of the fault are given based on the Bayesian network calculations. When a fault is corrected, the trouble ticket is updated with the knowledge learned from correcting the fault. The updated trouble ticket information is used to automatically update the appropriate probability matrices in the Bayesian network.

Systems and methods for detecting changes, and in particular faults, in a changing environment include constructing a profile of the environment using observations made during no fault conditions. A range of values for one or more 'trusted' variables are identified as values indicative of a no fault condition. Data is also collected (only at times when the trusted variable(s) indicate(s) no fault) for other variables which may be indicative of a fault condition. Statistical profiles are established for each of these other variables. The environment is continuously monitored and the normal profile, as well as the thresholds/ranges, are preferably continuously updated during normal conditions, as indicated by the trusted variable(s). When, during monitoring of the environment, the trusted variable(s) exhibit value(s) outside the normal range, a possible fault condition is indicated and the present values of the other variables are examined to determine whether or not any of these variables exhibit values outside the normal profiled thresholds/ranges. Depending on which of these variables exhibits an abnormal value, a diagnosis of the fault may be possible. A method for determining the accuracy of trusted and fault variables is also disclosed.
