A camera or other imaging device or other system configures its JPEG engine to produce a JPEG image that is in compliance with the JPEG specification but specially constructed. The configuration is chosen such that the JPEG image information for pixels of an image is stored in 8- or 16-bit groups, unlike a typical JPEG image in which image information is stored in groups of varying numbers of bits. A final software step reads the JPEG image information and constructs an equivalent MPEG I-frame. The 8- and 16-bit grouping in the JPEG image facilitates efficient conversion from JPEG to MPEG.

Method for using a JPEG engine to assist in efficiently constructing MPEG I-frames

A focus lens and a zoom lens group having a first zoom lens and a second zoom lens are controlled separately from one another in an internal-focus camera. The positions of the focus lens and the second zoom lens in the zoom lens group are tracked, and are controlled to approach no closer to one another than a minimum safe distance to avert collisions between the focus lens and the second zoom lens.

A camera, at power-on, determines elapsed time since power-off. The camera restores at least one control setting to a persistent value when the elapsed time is less than a predetermined threshold. The camera restores the at least one control setting to a default value when the elapsed time exceeds the predetermined threshold.
