Systems and methods for controlling power flow to and from an energy storage system are provided. One energy storage system includes an energy storage device and a bidirectional inverter configured to control a flow of power into or out of the energy storage device via a plurality of phases. The energy storage system further includes a controller configured to control the bidirectional inverter based on a load condition on one or more phases. The controller is configured to control the bidirectional inverter to store power generated by a generator set in the energy storage device and transmit power from the energy storage device to a load driven by the generator set in response to detecting a load imbalance between the phases.

Energy storage system

A system for providing programmable grid response characteristics includes a generator set having an alternator output voltage, where the alternator output voltage is rectified to provide DC power to a DC bus of the generator set. The system further includes a programmable inverter having power electronics configured to receive a response requirement corresponding to a code requirement of a grid, receive the DC power from the DC bus, and condition the DC power based on the response requirement to provide an AC output response. The AC output response meets specifications of the response requirement.

Programmable inverter for controllable grid response

Systems and methods for controlling power flow to and from an energy storage system are provided. One energy storage system includes an energy storage device and a bidirectional inverter configured to control a flow of power into or out of the energy storage device. The energy storage system further includes a controller configured to control the bidirectional inverter based on one or more signals received from the generator set coupled to the inverter via an AC bus. The controller is configured to, based on the one or more signals, control the bidirectional inverter to store power generated by the generator set in the energy storage device and transmit power from the energy storage device to a load driven by the generator set to maintain the generator set within a range of one or more operating conditions.

A method of operating a power generator comprises receiving, a fault code corresponding to an operating condition of the power generator being outside of an acceptable range. A generator controller determines a cost of increased maintenance or repairing damage associated with overriding the fault code and maintaining existing power output from the power generator through the operating condition. A cost of a utility fine or contractual penalty associated with shutting down the power generator is determined in response to the fault code. The generator controller compares the cost of the utility fine or contractual penalty associated with shutting down the power generator with the cost of increased maintenance or damage repair to the power generator associated with overriding the fault code and maintaining existing power output through the operating condition. In response to the comparing, the fault code is overridden continuing operation of the power generator.
