Embodiments of this disclosure pertain to a strengthened glass article including a first surface and a second surface opposing the first surface defining a thickness (t) of about less than about 1.1 mm, a compressive stress layer extending from the first surface to a depth of compression (DOC) of about 0.1&#xb7;t or greater, such that when the glass article fracture, it breaks into a plurality of fragments having an aspect ratio of about 5 or less. In some embodiments, the glass article exhibits an equibiaxial flexural strength of about 20 kgf or greater, after being abraded with 90-grit SiC particles at a pressure of 25 psi for 5 seconds. Devices incorporating the glass articles described herein and methods for making the same are also disclosed.

Glass articles exhibiting improved fracture performance

A glass-based article having an amorphous phase and a crystalline phase, and a first surface and a second surface opposing the first surface thereby defining a thickness (t) of the glass-based article. The glass-based article having a stress profile with a surface compressive stress (CS) and a maximum central tension (CT). The maximum CT is greater than or equal to 50 MPa and less than or equal to 200 MPa and is positioned within the glass-based article at a range from greater than or equal to 0.4&#xb7;t and less than or equal to 0.6&#xb7;t. The surface CS is greater than or equal to 200 MPa and less than or equal to 500 MPa, and a depth of compression (DOC) is from greater than or equal to 0.14&#xb7;t and less than or equal to 0.25&#xb7;t.

A coating composition containing a radiation-curable component, a photoinitiator, and a UV absorber is described. The coating composition may be applied to an optical fiber and cured to form a coating. The UV absorber provides a protective function by inhibiting unintended curing of the coating that may occur upon exposure of the fiber to UV light during fiber processing. The spectral overlap of the photoinitiator and UV absorber is minimized to permit efficient photoinitiation of the curing reaction over one or more wavelengths. Photoinitiation may be excited by an LED source with a peak emission wavelength in the range from 360 nm-410 nm.

Optical fiber coating and composition with UV-absorbing additive

An optical fiber ribbon includes a plurality of optical fibers and a ribbon matrix having an inner matrix surrounding and encapsulating the optical fibers, wherein the inner matrix is the cured product of an inner matrix composition substantially free of oligomer components, and an outer matrix surrounding the inner matrix, wherein the outer matrix is the cured product of an outer matrix composition substantially free of oligomer components.

Optical fiber ribbons and ribbon matrix materials having low oligomer content

A cell culture microcarrier includes (1) a polystyrene microcarrier base having a remnant of a carboxylic acid group, and (ii) a polypeptide conjugated to the base via the remnant of the carboxylic acid group. The polypeptide may contain a cell adhesive sequence, such as RGD. Cells cultured with such microcarriers exhibit peptide-specific binding to the microcarriers.

High surface area substrate for cell culture

A coating composition including a reinforcing agent. The coating composition may include one or more radiation-curable monofunctional monomers, one or more radiation-curable multifunctional monomers or oligomers, a photoinitiator, and a reinforcing agent. The monofunctional monomers, multifunctional monomers, and multifunctional oligomers may include acrylate groups. The reinforcing agent may be an acrylic co-polymer that includes two or more repeat units. At least one of the repeat units includes chemical groups that enable self-association of the acrylic co-polymer. Self-association of the acrylic co-polymer may improve the tensile strength of coatings formed from the coating compositions.

Optical fiber coating compositions with non-curable reinforcing agents

A low cost composition that cures rapidly and which is suitable for coating an optical fiber comprises at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer; at least one photoinitiator; and at least one non-radiation-curable polar polymer having pendent groups that facilitate low energy chemical bonding, hydrogen bonding, dipolar interactions or other interactions with radical compounds formed during polymerization of the monomer. The non-radiation-curable polar polymer(s) are inexpensive and reduce and/or eliminate the need for expensive urethane acrylate oligomers, without sacrificing properties, and while achieving rapid cure speeds.

Low cost, fast curing optical fiber coatings

The present invention provides materials suitable for use as secondary coatings of optical fibers. According to one embodiment of the invention, a curable composition includes an oligomer and at least one monomer, which when cured forms a cured polymeric material having a Young's modulus of at least about 1200 MPa, and a fracture toughness of at least about 0.7 MPa&#xb7;m. According to another embodiment of the invention, a coated optical fiber includes an optical fiber; a primary coating encapsulating the optical fiber; and a secondary coating encapsulating the primary coating, the secondary coating having a Young's modulus of at least about 1200 MPa, and a fracture toughness of at least about 0.7 MPa&#xb7;m.

Coated optical fiber and curable compositions suitable for coating optical fiber

A plasticized ceramic-forming mixture and a method for stiffening the mixture, the mixture comprising a combination of inorganic powder, one or more plasticizing organic binders, a radiation-curable monomer, a photoinitiator, and water, and the method comprising stiffening the surfaces of extruded shapes of the mixture by applying electromagnetic energy to the surfaces following extrusion.

An optical fiber ribbon includes a plurality of optical fibers encapsulated within a matrix material, where the optical fiber coating(s) and the matrix material(s), and optionally any ink layers thereon, are characterized by compatible chemical and/or physical properties, whereby the fiber coating and matrix and any ink layers therebetween can be reliably stripped from the optical fibers to afford a suitable strip cleanliness. Novel ink formulations that can be used in the making of such fiber optic ribbons, methods of making such ribbons, and their use are also described.

The present invention relates to optical fiber coating systems capable of providing a high degree of microbend protection to an optical fiber, and an optical fiber coated therewith. According to one embodiment of the invention, an optical fiber coating system includes a primary coating and a secondary coating, wherein when a ribbon having twelve large effective area optical fibers coated with the coating system is subjected to the ribbon optical performance test at a wavelength of 1550 nm, the average change in attenuation is about 0.020 dB/km or less.
