An error mechanism provides stored error information to assist in determining the cause of failure of a storage device such as a hard disk drive. The error mechanism gathers information surrounding an error event from various software and hardware components in the system. An event command is sent to the storage device that includes the gathered information. The storage device stores the gathered information from the event command in a log on the storage device. After the storage device is removed from the system the error information in the log can be used to determine the cause of the failure. The event command may be standardized into an existing industry communication protocol or be vendor specific.

Reporting errors to a data storage device

A method is disclosed, as well as a related system and computer program product, for use with a plurality of networked computing devices comprising a plurality of physical ports. The method comprises determining that a non-volatile memory (NVM) device is removably connected with a first port owned by a first virtual machine associated with a first owning entity, and determining whether the NVM device was previously connected with a second port owned by a second virtual machine associated with a second owning entity. The method further comprises determining whether the NVM device has a predefined association with a first instruction file that specifies one or more restrictions for accessing data stored in the NVM device. The method further comprises providing, to the first virtual machine, access to the data stored in the NVM device in accordance with the one or more restrictions.

Controlling access to removable non-volatile memory device using instruction file

A method is disclosed for use with a plurality of networked computing devices comprising a plurality of physical ports. The method comprises determining that a non-volatile memory (NVM) device is removably connected with a first port owned by a first virtual machine associated with a first owning entity, and determining whether the NVM device was previously connected with a second port owned by a second virtual machine associated with a second owning entity. The method further comprises determining whether the NVM device has a predefined association with a first instruction file that specifies one or more restrictions for accessing data stored in the NVM device. The method further comprises providing, to the first virtual machine, access to the data stored in the NVM device in accordance with the one or more restrictions.

An optimizer controller controls a hypervisor optimizer to regulate operation of the optimizer to insure the optimizer does not negatively impact operation of software applications. The optimizer controller monitors applications and application performance to determine whether to turn on or off specific optimization features for specific applications. The optimizer may also notify a user of potential problems. The optimizer controller may utilize optimization rules for specific applications that set the conditions for controlling the optimizer. The rules may be dynamically changed based on observed performance and trends of the applications.

A first question may be received. A first tag may be identified. The first tag may correspond to a first demographic trait. The first tag may be for use in providing a context for generating a first answer estimate to the first question. The first answer estimate may be generated using natural language processing and based on the first tag.

Demographic-based learning in a question answering system

In an embodiment, a current internal corrosion level at a current time is read from an internal corrosion sensor that is internal to a computer. An internal corrosion difference is calculated between the current internal corrosion level and a previous internal corrosion level. Upon determining that the internal corrosion difference is more than a first threshold amount, a first action is performed that decreases an internal temperature of the computer. In a further embodiment, upon determining that the internal corrosion difference is less than a second threshold amount, a second action is performed that allows the internal temperature of the computer to increase.

Decreasing the internal temperature of a computer in response to corrosion

A pre-initialized value of contents of a memory location is identified. A load value of contents loaded from the memory location by execution of a first instruction that loads from the memory location is also identified. A comparison is made between the load value and the pre-initialized value. Based on the comparison, a determination is made that the load value and the pre-initialized value are the same. In response to this determination, it is indicated that the first instruction contains an uninitialized memory reference.

Detecting uninitialized memory references

Method and apparatus for enhancing an executable is disclosed herein. In one embodiment, the method includes instrumenting an executable with additional program code to detect run-time errors, and while running the instrumented executable within a debug environment generating the run-time errors detected by the additional program code, upon reaching a breakpoint, identifying any of the run-time errors which occurred while executing a function in which the breakpoint is located, and transmitting an indication of the identified run-time errors to the debugging environment.

Enhancing the debugger stack with recently reported errors under debug

The present disclosure relates to maintaining assertions in an integrated development environment (IDE) tool. According to one embodiment, the IDE receives a request to add an assertion at a specified location within source code of an application from a user interacting with an integrated development environment (IDE) tool. The source code is stored in a first file associated with a development project. The IDE tool receives a definition for the assertion and stores the definition for the assertion in a second file associated with the development project. The IDE tool creates an association in the development project between the source code of the application and the assertion.

Managed assertions in an integrated development environment

The present disclosure relates to maintaining assertions in source code components of a development project by an integrated development environment (IDE) tool. According to one embodiment, a request is received to build a software application generated from the development project. Based on prior executions of the software application, resource requirements for each of one or more assertions included in the prior executions of the software application are identified. One or more of the assertions based on the identified resource requirements are selectively inserted in the source code components. The source code components of the development project are compiled to build the software application.

Optimizing program performance with assertion management

A computer-implemented method of reducing impact of performance data gathering on execution of instrumented code comprises gathering respective performance data for each of a plurality of routines in the instrumented code over a plurality of execution instances of the instrumented code. The method also comprises determining that the gathered performance data for the at least one selected routine follows an identified pattern for at least one selected routine from the plurality of routines and, in response to determining that the at least one selected routine follows an identified pattern, removing instrumentation associated with the at least one selected routine.
