An optical symbol reading system comprises an image sensor operative to capture an image of a target area, a color-sensing system sensitive to certain colors in the visible spectrum, an illumination system operative to produce various types of illumination based on illumination parameters, and a surface-profiling system arranged to measure distance to multiple points of at least one surface in the target area. The illumination system, the image sensor, and the color-sensing system are arranged such that emitted light from the illumination system, in accordance with a selected type of illumination, is directed towards the target area while a portion of the emitted light is reflected from any object of interest present in the target area and received by the image sensor and the color-sensing system. The type of illumination is selected based on output from the color-sensing system and the surface-profiling system.

Direct part marking code reading with multimodal object sensing

A system and method process for imaging DPM codes by a handheld barcode reader may include outputting a polarized light beam from an exit window of the handheld barcode reader to illuminate a direct part marking (DPM) code positioned on an object over a first time period. A non-polarized light beam may be output via from the exit window of the handheld barcode reader over a second time period. Reflected light from the object including polarized light from the DPM code received via a partially polarized receiving window may be sensed. The DPM code may be decoded by the handheld barcode reader.

A scanning device includes: a housing portion defining a scanner head axis and a nose end; an image sensor to capture an indicia; an optics component between the image sensor and the nose end to cooperate with the image sensor to define a scanning device FOV extending along a scanning device optical axis through the nose end and toward an object surface, and to convey light reflected from the object surface within the scanning device FOV to the image sensor; and a light source to illuminate the object surface, wherein the scanning device optical axis is tilted relative to the scanner head axis to cause the scanning device FOV to extend along the scanning device optical axis in a direction tilted away from in parallel with the scanner head axis to prevent including a direct reflection of the light source from the object surface in the scanning device FOV.

A reader contains a housing with a window having a peripheral rim. The housing has a device for reading coded information which generates a field projecting through the window towards the outside of the housing, and has a device for visually indicating the result to a user. The visual indication device generates an indication appearing substantially at least on the window, on a portion of the peripheral rim of the window, or on a portion of the housing adjoining laterally the peripheral rim of the window. The housing portion is at least on the left side, right side, or below the window. Additionally, a camera based checkout security system includes at least a checkout security camera and a fixed position reader of coded information. The checkout security camera generates a camera field of view directed towards the window of the fixed position reader of coded information.

A code reader may include a light source configured to illuminate a machine-readable indicia representative of a standard code associated with an item. An image sensor may be configured to receive an image of the machine readable indicia. An illumination source may be configured to illuminate an anti-counterfeiting key that, when illuminated by the illumination source, reflects the illumination from the illumination source to be incident on the image sensor. A processing unit may be in electrical communication with the image sensor, and may be configured to decode the standard code of the machine-readable indicia and check validity of the reflected illumination from the anti-counterfeiting key.

A code reader and process may include an optoelectronic reading device configured to read a machine-readable indicia. A primary aiming illuminator may be configured to generate a first light beam to illuminate a first aiming pattern (i) onto a surface on which the machine-readable indicia is positioned and (ii) within a field-of-view of the optoelectronic reading device. A secondary aiming illuminator may be configured to generate a second light beam to illuminate a second aiming pattern (i) onto the surface on which the machine-readable indicia is positioned and (ii) outside or in a marginal region of the field-of-view of said optoelectronic reading device.

One embodiment of a system and method for imaging a scene from a barcode scanner device may include creating a first and second optical paths of the scene, and then causing a switchable mirror disposed along the first and second optical paths to operate in a reflective state and a transparent state. The barcode scanner device may then capture images at different focal distances and with a different field-of-views when the switchable mirror is operating in the reflective state and the transparent state.

A method of scanning an object may include determining that an object is proximately positioned relative to a scanning volume of a presentation scanner in response to receiving at least one object presence signal prior to scanning a code indicia positioned on the object. At least one object sensory indicator device may be activated in response to determining that the object is proximately positioned relative to the scanning volume so as to indicate that the object is proximate to the scanning volume to a user. A second level of detection and location feedback may be provided for code indicia within the scanning volume.

A machine readable symbol reader can provide illumination form portions other than or in addition to the head of the reader, to enhance the ability to successfully read machine-readable symbols, for example symbols on curved surfaces and/or DPM symbols. A machine readable symbol reader include a first set of receiving optics in a head of the reader and a second set of receiving optics in a portion of the reader other than the head, to provide an alternative line of sight or field of view.

A barcode scanner incorporates a subdivided exit window with a top portion and a bottom portion placed at different positions along a z-axis. An aiming source emits light from the top portion of the exit window and is positioned from a receiving sensor such that obstruction of the receiving sensor's field of view by the aiming source is avoided. An illumination source emits light from the bottom portion of the exit window and the receiving sensor received reflected light at the bottom portion of the exit window. The illumination source is positioned such that light from the illumination source reflected by the exit window is not received by the receiving sensor.

A data reader for reading and decoding a code from an item. The data reader includes an imager operable to form an image of the code from an item located in a field of view of the data reader. The data reader further includes an illumination system including optics arranged to direct light from one or more illumination sources along one of a variety of different optical paths to illuminate the field of view of the data reader with one of a plurality of light patterns. The data reader also includes an active element controllable to selectively direct the light along one of the optical paths.

A scanner configured to provide different patterns of light for scanning is provided. The scanner may include electrochromic surfaces and reflective surfaces, which can be arranged and used to direct light through different pathways within the scanner. The scanner may further include one or more light emitting components, receiving optics, and power supplies to facilitate generating the different patterns of light for scanning. A method of scanning is also provided.
