Suggested is a method for making and using an extract of halophytes or psammophilous plants comprising the steps of contacting the plant materials with a solvent, re moving the dissolved extract from the residue, recovering the extract and topically or orally administering the extract to a patient in need of dysfunctions of skin and hair.

Extracts of microalgae and their application

New extracts of microalgae, halophytes and psammophilous plants are suggested, obtainable by treating said microalgae and plants with a solvent selected from the group consisting of C-Caliphatic alcohols, ethyl acetate, water or their mixtures, removing the dissolved extracts from the residues and recovering the pure extracts from the solvent. The extracts show excellent activity as regulators of the metabolism of human sebaceous glands.

Suggested is a pharmaceutical composition comprising valerian extracts or their derivatives that is particularly useful for affecting the sebaceous gland metabolism by exerting a relevant activity as regulator of sebum production (sebogenesis) and the subcutis adipocytes metabolism by regulating adipogenesis.

(iii)sp. and/or (iv)sp. obtainable by treating said microalgae with a solvent selected from the group consisting of C-Caliphatic alcohols, ethyl acetate, water or their mixtures, removing the dissolved extracts from the residues and recovering the pure extracts from the solvent. The extracts show excellent properties particularly in modulating the metabolism of human skin and hair follicles.
