A method determines a resonance frequency of a resonant device. The method includes stimulating the resonant device with a periodic input signal having a frequency in a frequency interval; determining a frequency value for said periodic input signal in said frequency interval for which a phase-difference between said periodic input signal and a corresponding periodic output signal of the resonant device is minimum; generating a flag indicating that a resonance frequency has been determined; and generating signals representing said resonance frequency as a value of the frequency of said periodic input signal.

A method of PWM regulating a motor through a half-bridge drive stage includes sampling the motor current to obtain sampled values during driving intervals or during current decay intervals, and comparing a last sampled value with a current threshold. The motor is coupled in a slow decay electrical path for the duration of a current decay interval if the last sampled value does not exceed the current threshold. Otherwise the motor is coupled in a fast decay electrical path for a portion of the duration of the current decay interval, and is coupled in the slow decay electrical path for a remaining part of the duration of the same current decay interval.

A method of driving a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor includes sensing or estimating a back electromotive force induced in at least a winding of the motor by the rotation of a rotor of the motor; and reading, from a memory, values of a first voltage waveform having a phase angle with respect to the back electromotive force. The method also includes generating a driving voltage corresponding to the sum of values of a control voltage, obtained as product of the values of the first voltage waveform by a first coefficient determined as a function of a desired value of motor torque, and values of a cancelation voltage of the back electromotive force. The method also includes applying the driving voltage at the motor winding.

An apparatus detects the position of a rotor of an electric motor having three phases and a plurality of windings. The apparatus includes circuitry configured to connect at least two of said windings between first and second reference voltages according to a first current path disconnect said at least two windings, and allow the current stored in said two windings to be discharged through a second current path. The apparatus comprises a measuring circuit configured to measure the time period between the starting instant of storing the current in the two windings and the final instant of discharging the two windings and a rotor detector configured to detect the rotor position based at least in part on the measured time period.

Apparatus for detecting the position of a rotor of an electric motor and related method

An integrated control and power driving system moves a read/write head carrying arm over the surface of a disk. The integrated control and power driving system is applicable to a spindle motor, a mass storage disk drive and a voice-coil motor, for example, and includes a first chip and a second chip. The first chip integrates the output power stages driving the motors, and has an interface for outputting feedback signals representing functioning conditions of the voice-coil motor and of the spindle motor, and for receiving digital control signals of the output power stages. The second chip integrates logic drive and control circuitries of the power stages and an interface for receiving the feedback signals output by the first chip, and for transmitting to the first chip the digital control signals.

The present invention refers to a digital apparatus suitable for driving a load. The apparatus an input for receiving a voltage signal varied by an external disturbance and comprises means for sampling at least the external disturbance such as noise, and a driving circuit such as a pulse width modulator for driving the load with a suitable output voltage. The apparatus includes a control circuit suitable for generating digital commands representative of a desired output voltage of the apparatus. The apparatus also comprises digital correction circuit suitable for generating a correction signal on the basis of the difference between the value of the current sample and the value of the previous sample of at least the external disturbance. The output of the driving circuit is governed by the correction signal.

A method for estimating resistance of a DC motor for positioning read/write heads of a data storage disk is provided. A driving circuit of a DC motor includes a control circuit for providing a control signal, and a motor drive circuit commanded by the control circuit for providing respective command signals for the switches of an output power stage connected to the DC motor. The driving circuit prevents generation of voltage surges having a significant magnitude on the power supply line because the driving circuit has logic circuits for preventing any substantial inversion in the direction of current flow in the supply lines when the DC motor operates as a current generator.
