Aspects of the present disclosure describe authentication of a user equipment (UE) in a network. It can be determined, by the UE, to access a discovered network for wireless communications, and based on a service provider associated with the discovered network, to use a modified universal subscriber identity module (USIM) subscription stored in the UE for authentication with the discovered network. The UE can obtain a subscriber identifier for authenticating on the discovered network via the authentication, where the subscriber identifier is generated based at least in part on a service provider identifier associated with the service provider and a modified mobile subscriber identity associated with the service provider. The UE can send the subscriber identifier to a node of the discovered network for the authentication.

Techniques for subscription-based authentication in wireless communications

Methods and apparatus for initializing a SIM card may include sending a request to read a file from the SIM card. In addition, the methods and apparatus may include receiving a SIM version identifier for the file from the SIM card and determining whether the SIM version identifier matches a cached version identified in a cache. When the SIM version identifier matches the cached version identifier, the methods and apparatus may include accessing the file from the cache.

The apparatus may include a frontend component and a storage element. Embodiments are not limited to a SIM card, and are applicable to other types of smart cards, such as an UICC (Universal Integrated Circuit Card).

This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus for managing information in a smart storage device. In one aspect a smart storage device is provided that is configured to be coupled to a wireless communications apparatus operating in a wireless communications network. The smart storage device includes a memory configured to store network access information for accessing services of the network. The smart storage device further includes a controller configured to send a message to the wireless communications apparatus including data notifying the wireless communications apparatus of an update to the network access information. The data further includes a command that the wireless communications apparatus suspend an active operation of the wireless communications apparatus and initiate updating information managed by the wireless communications apparatus based on one or more conditions. The updating of the information is based on at least a portion of the updated network access information.

Various embodiments for performing remote authentication of a virtual subscriber identity module (SIM) on a mobile communication device include receiving, on a first subscription of the mobile communication device, an authentication request from a virtual SIM network. The mobile communication device may tune from the first subscription to a second subscription of the mobile communication device to send the authentication request to a remote server and periodically perform tune-aways between the first subscription and the second subscription while determining whether the remote server has sent an authentication response through the second subscription. The mobile communication device may send the authentication response to the virtual SIM network through the first subscription in response to determining that the remote server has sent an authentication response through the second subscription.

Methods and apparatuses are presented herein for improved operation of a Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) of one or more user equipment (UE). For example, an example method of wireless communications is presented, which may include monitoring, by a UE, one or more items received from a UICC of the UE during a UICC operation. In addition, the example method may also include determining that at least one of (a) a number of the one or more items having a first item type exceeds a threshold number, or (b) an elapsed time since the UICC operation started exceeds a threshold time. Processing of the first command may be completed. Processing of a current one of the at least one additional command, which was being processed before, during, or after completion of the processing of the first command, may be completed. The described apparatus and methods may include a processor, a memory in communication with the processor, a removable module in communication with the processor and operable to store data, an initialization component executable by the processor and configured to initialize the removable module, and an authentication component executable by the processor and configured to: receive a command from the removable module to perform an authentication operation, wherein the command is a standard message having a command qualifier value or code that represents an authentication challenge; obtain a random value from the removable module in response to the command; calculate a response based on the random value and a terminal key stored in the memory; and transmit the response to the removable module.
