An electro-optic devicecomprising a substrate in which first and second waveguidesare formed. The device also comprises first and second electrodescomprising an optically transparent conductive material and including primary portionsoverlying the first and second waveguidesfor electrically biasing the first and second waveguides. The device is configured such that one of the first and second electrodes includes one other portionarranged alongside the primary portionof the other of the first and second electrodes. This arrangement improves the electro-optic efficiency of the device without the need for a buffer layer in the electrodes.

Electro-optic devices

Accordingly, a preferred embodiment of the present invention comprises an electro-optical device having an optical waveguide that includes two optical pathways, wherein the optical waveguide is embedded within the substrate. A bias electrode layer is formed on the surface of the substrate. A buffer layer is formed on at least a portion of the bias electrode layer and the surface of the substrate. An RF electrode layer is formed on the buffer layer. A bias-tee electrically couples the bias electrode layer and the RF electrode layer.

Electro-optical device

An electro-optical device capable of modulating the amplitude or phase of an optical output in response to an electrical data or control signal, or of switching it, has reduced frequency-dependence and a better combination of operating voltage and bandwidth. It comprises a body of electro-optically active material, waveguides for passing light through the body, and electrodes for applying an electric field with a frequency in the microwave region to the body, and its transverse geometry is such as to maintain adequate phase velocity matching between optical and microwave frequencies. There is a discontinuity in either the body or at least one of the electrodes such that the direction of the electro-optic effect is reversed for a portion of the length of the device at or near its downstream end. The result of such a discontinuity (in combination with phase velocity matching) is that the device operates in three successive zones: in the upstream zone, desirable phase change is induced for all frequencies in the bandwidth of the device; in the middle zone, desirable phase change is induced for frequencies in the upper part of the bandwidth, but phase change in the lower frequencies becomes excessive; while in the downstream zone, there is no significant phase change in the higher frequencies but the excess change at lower frequencies is reversed.

An optical signal amplification device ( ) comprises an optical amplifier ( ) having a wavelength-dependent gain and an equalization device ( ) optically coupled in series to the optical amplifier and having a wavelength-dependent transmission function that substantially equalize the gain of the optical amplifier, the equalization device comprising a waveguide Bragg grating having a substantially constant refractive index envelope and a chirp rate that varies in such a way as to obtain the wavelength-dependent transmission function.
