It is an objective of the current disclosure to design a novel communications system capable of offering improvement in channel capacity compared to current communications systems. To this end, the disclosure teaches how to add new information to a select number of Degrees of Freedom (DOF), through three design steps. All three steps aim to design the system such that the minimum required average received Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) is reduced for a given desired capacity and for a given specified mask. The first design step identifies the select number of DOF required for achieving the desired capacity. The second design step enhances the contribution of the selected DOF by matching them to the specified mask. This step aims to have the transmitted signal comply with the specified mask. The third design step randomizes the DOF using a pseudo-random phase. This step aims to reduce the required average received SNR.

Communication system of high capacity

Systems and methods for uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) communications can improve channel capacity between one or more access nodes and one or more terminal nodes. The communications may utilize, for example, multi-user multiple-input multiple-output techniques with cooperation between access nodes. A network node may determine an ordering combination and associated pre-weighting values, provide the pre-weighting values to one or more terminal nodes, receive signals transmitted from the terminal nodes using the pre-weighting values; and process the received signals using the ordering combination and the pre-weighting values. Two constraints can be jointly used: a minimum performance constraint and a maximum transmit power constraint. Example systems search all possible ordering combinations to find a best combination, for example, the ordering combination that maximizes communication rates. The ordering combination may be used with combinations of full or partial successive interference cancellation in receivers and full or partial iterative pre-cancellation pre-coding in transmitters.

Enhanced pre-ordered pre-weighted transmission

Systems and method for adaptive constellation mapping determine transmission formats for simultaneous transmission from multiple transmitter chains. The adaptive constellation mapping can select a winning combination of mappings using distance metrics. The distance metrics can be calculated from estimated received signal constellations at a multi-layer receiver. The multi-layer receiver can separate the data received from each of the transmitter chains. Additional systems and method can determine a whether to use adaptive constellation mapping or an alternate transmission format. Further systems and methods can determine a transmit arrangement that include selection of which of multiple transmitters will be a part of an adaptive constellation mapping transmission, the number of layers that will be transmitted by each transmitter, the transmitter chains that will be used, and which of multiple antennas that will be used.

A method for transmission by a transmitting node in a communication network using a plurality of non-orthogonal carriers, including obtaining, by a processor in the transmitting node, an information element data set comprised of a first number of elements, applying, by the processor, a transform matrix to the information element data set to obtain an output samples data set comprised of a second number of elements, the transform matrix being based on a non-linear function applied to a non-orthogonal frequency division matrix comprised of a plurality of columns wherein each column is associated one of the plurality of non-orthogonal carriers, and transmitting the output samples data set from a transmitter in the transmitting node.

An orally administrable implement for expanding in a stomach of an animal, including a mammal, to fill a space in the stomach, is provided for weight control. The implement includes: a fluid-permeable expandable container having a first dimension and a second dimension; and a plurality of clusters comprising a swellable material contained within the container and capable of swelling when contacted with a fluid; whereby when the implement is ingested, the fluid in the stomach enters the container causing the clusters therein to swell and the container to expand from the first dimension to the second dimension.

Bezoar-forming units for forming at least one temporary bezoar in a gastrointestinal organ of an animal, including a mammal, to fill a space in the said organ, are provided for weight control. The units include biodegradable fiber-based configurations of various length and shape having a first dimension and a second dimension; whereby when the bezoar-forming units are located in the given gastrointestinal organ, at least one temporary, permeable bezoar is formed.

A method and apparatus for determining the location of a device capable of receiving/transmitting wireless signals from/to reference stations is provided, for example providing wireless signals in the form of range information to the device; determining a region or area surrounding each reference station, wherein regions intersect to form intersecting spaces; defining the intersecting spaces to delineate a device location search space and determining device locations within the search space; determining combinations of said device locations, and using a distribution analysis test to examine a skewness value of each combination; detecting and selecting the combinations of device positions that result in a minimum skewness value or simply a combination that provides skewness value less than a pre-defined minimum threshold value; and utilizing the detected and selected combinations to determine a refined final position of the device.

Method and apparatus for determining position of a wireless device

A method of identifying a target mobile transceiver in a communications network that includes multiple unknown mobile transceivers. In this aspect of the method, a location system interrogates the target mobile transceiver multiple times in an interrogation pattern to cause the target mobile transceiver to transmit a signal in response to each interrogation. The location system monitors signals transmitted by all mobile transceivers in the network, and identifies the target mobile transceiver as the mobile transceiver whose pattern of response most closely matches the interrogation pattern.

The intention of the invention is to produce a network-based Wireless Location System (WLS) whereby existing Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) Cellular Telephones (CTs) can be located passively without modification to the CTs or to the cellular antenna infrastructure. More specifically, the invention consists of methods and apparatus to estimate the position and velocity of a Cellular Telephone (CT) using either the Time Of Arrival (TOA) of a signal transmitted by the CT, its Phase Of Arrival (POA), its Frequency Of Arrival (FOA), or a combination thereof, at several antennas at a number of Monitoring Sites (MSs). In order to solve for the coordinates of the CT, the patent uses either hyperbolic multilateration based on Time Difference Of Arrival (TDOA), or linear multiangulation based on Phase Difference Of Arrival (PDOA), or both. In order to solve for the velocity of the CT, the patent uses FOA based on Frequency Difference Of Arrival (FDOA). An important contribution of this invention is the way the CT is forced to transmit radio signals for location purposes. Another important contribution is the application of Super-Resolution (SR) techniques to increase the resolution of the estimated TOAs, POAs or FOAs.

Network-based wireless location system to position AMPs (FDMA) cellular telephones, part I

MultiCode Spread Spectrum (MCSS) is a modulation scheme that assigns a number N of Spread Spectrum (SS) codes to an individual user where the number of chips per SS code is M. When viewed as Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum, MCSS requires up to N correlators (or equivalently up to N Matched Filters) at the receiver with a complexity of the order of NM operations. In addition, a non ideal communication channel can cause InterCode Interference (ICI), i.e. interference between the N SS codes. In this patent, we introduce three new types of MCSS. MCSS Type I allows the information in a MCSS signal to be detected using a sequence of partial corrrelations with a combined complexity of the order of M operations. MCSS Type II allows the information in a MCSS signal to be detected in a sequence of low complexity parallel operations which reduce the ICI. MCSS Type III allows the information in a MCSS signal to be detected using a filter suitable for ASIC implementation or on Digital Signal Processor, which reduces the effect of multipath. In addition to low complexity detection and reduced ICI, MCSS has the added advantage that it is spectrally efficient.
