A method of verification of rights is disclosed, contained in a security module associated to an apparatus processing broadcasted digital data. The apparatus is connected to a management center transmitting encrypted rights messages for accessing the digital data. The method includes reception and reading by the security module of all or part of a rights message including at least one right and means for verifying the right, decryption and verification of the rights message and updating of a rights memory, and storage of all or part of the rights message in a messages memory. During a further verification step, the method includes identification of at least one right present in the rights memory, search of the corresponding stored rights message and verification of the rights message, comparison of the right contained in the rights message with the corresponding right stored in the rights memory, and determination of a default state when the result of the comparison indicates a difference.

Method for verifying rights contained in a security module

A system for transmitting and recording digital data is included. Further, a system for transmitting transmit scrambled audio data that is to be recorded on a mini disc reader is included. A system for transmission and recording of digital data includes transmission means adapted to prepare and transmit scrambled digital data together with at least one encrypted control word and a digital recording device adapted to receive and record the scrambled digital data and encrypted control word on a digital support. A method of transmitting and recording digital data scrambled using a control word. The scrambled data is transmitted together with the control word, and the method includes encrypting the control word with a first key. The encrypted control word is transmitted and received, and then decrypted with a decoder that includes an equivalent of the first key. The control word is re-encrypted with a second key stored in a portable support device that is received by the decoder, and the portable support device may be used with any suitable decoder. The re-encrypted control word and the scrambled digital data are recorded on a digital recording medium. An apparatus for transmitting and recording digital data scrambled using a control word. The scrambled data is transmitted together with the control word, and the apparatus includes a transmitter that encrypts the control word with a first key and transmits the encrypted control word. A decoder receives the encrypted control word and decrypts the control word. A portable support device including a second key is received by the decoder, and the decoder uses the second key to re-encrypt the decrypted control word and record the re-encrypted control word and the scrambled digital data on a digital recording medium. The portable support device may be used with any suitable decoder or digital recorder.

A receiver/decoder is programed only to accept a current entitlement control message (EMM) if it has received at least a previous EMM of a previous calendar period. When this is received, it is used to check present rights in the receiver/decoder. The invention prevents an original subscriber from fraudulently obtaining rights by disconnecting a decoder (before an authorising message can update the decoder's memory to prevent decryption) and by reconnecting the decoder (so as to be mistaken for a new subscriber legitimately having those rights).
