A steel wire to be coated is brought across the graphite spout of a crucible filled with a bath of molten metal, after having first been heated in a tubular duct filled with protective gas by an electric coil powered by a high frequency source to a temperature lower than that of the molten metal contained in the spout. The melting point of this metal is greater than the austenizing temperature of the steel. On leaving the spout, the coated steel wire is then cooled in a controlled manner to avoid hardening, for example, if it is a question of a steel of approximately 0.7% carbon, by having it spend several seconds in a fluidized bed whose temperature is maintained at a temperature of the order of 550.degree. C.

The coating device comprises a furnace (1) comprising a crucible (4) and a lateral distribution conduit (3) whose outlet communicates with an externally open release aperture (2) serving to distribute the molten metal over the entire width of the metal strip (6) to be coated. This strip (6) is entrained from a supply spool (7) to a storage spool (8) and passes over a positioning roll (10) mounted opposite to the release aperture (2), the spacing between this roll and the edge of the release aperture being adjustable by means of a screw (15). A bank of burners (16) is located opposite to the reverse of the strip (6) and upstream of the release aperture (2) in order to heat the strip before it passes in front of the release aperture (2). A molten metal bath is thus constantly maintained between this release aperture (2) and the face to be coated of the strip (6) which is covered with a layer of metal during its displacement.

This manufacturing process consists in forming a passivation layer on manganese pigments and thereafter mixing the latter with a resin to form a paint. This paint is electrically conductive since the passivation layer is based on chromate, Mn/Fe phosphate or Zn phosphate. In a case where filament-like articles (e.g. wires) are dip-coated by upwardly passing the article into a bath of molten metal through the bottom and top vertical openings of a spout containing the molten metal, the article to be coated is wrapped, before it enters the bottom inlet opening in the spout, with a blanket of protective gas at a pressure sufficient to cause the gas to penetrate into the spout simultaneously with the article, to progressively and regularly circulate around the molten metal and to steadily emerge from the upper opening of the spout still effectively shielding the freshly coated article.

A filiform workpiece such as a metal wire is advanced at high speed, after passage through several pretreatment baths, in a vertically upward direction through a closed-ended nozzle of a crucible by way of a lower inlet aperture and an upper outlet aperture of that nozzle which is completely filled with a thermally fusible coating material (e.g. zinc). A guide tube adjustably seated in the inlet aperture has an inner diameter substantially equaling that of the workpiece to be coated whereas the outlet aperture, formed by a collar of a substance which is not wettable by the coating material, has a diameter about two to three times as large. A short residence time of less than 5.multidot.10.sup.-2 second for any given point of the workpiece in the molten mass holds down the temperature of the workpiece and results in rapid hardening of the coating material upon emergence from the bath.
