A feed device for feeding a document folding and/or inserting machine with envelopes delivered by a general-purpose printer, said feed device comprising detection means for detecting the position of the envelope at the outlet of the printer and reorientation means for reorienting the envelope as a function of its position as determined by said detection means so as to enable documents to be inserted into the envelope. The detection means advantageously comprise a detector for detecting an edge of the envelope, and the reorientation means advantageously comprise a turntable.

An automatic document feeder for a folding and/or inserting machine has a document entry surmounted by at least two loading bins adapted to cooperate with the document entry in various modes of operation, individually or in combination, using a set of sensors and drive units and controlled by a programmed microprocessor of a control circuit via an input/output interface circuit in the feeder.

A device for selectively moistening the flap of envelopes has a moistening member and a pivoting moistening deflector selectively operable to moisten the flap or not. It further comprises a pivoting slide bar to the front of the moistening member and actuated between a protection position and a retracted position in front of the moistening member. The moistening deflector is adapted to cooperate with the slide bar and the moistening member and is coupled to the bar so that they are actuated virtually simultaneously. The device finds applications in automatic mail handling.
