The gas dispensing apparatus comprises a r&#xe9;servoir () having an upper wall (), a well () passing through the upper wall, and a gas dispensing device () located at least partially in the well () and having an external rigid portion () facing the inner wall of the well. The gas dispensing apparatus comprises a r&#xe9;silient tubular &#xe9;l&#xe9;ment () fitted into the well (). The rigid portion () of the device () is inserted therein. The well has an edge () extending outwardly and against which a stopping portion () of the tubular &#xe9;l&#xe9;ment is flexed under action of the rigid portion of the device inserted into the tubular &#xe9;l&#xeb;ment. The flexed lower portion preferably defines an annular protub&#xe9;rance that prevents upward movement of the tubular &#xe9;l&#xe9;ment relative to the well. A gas lighter of simplified construction and suitable for a brittle r&#xe9;servoir material such as amorphous polymers is obtained.

Gas lighter and method for manufacturing same

The present invention relates to disposable cigarette lighters which have a latch member which is intended to resist inadvertent operation and to make undesirable operation by unintended operators more difficult. The lighter preferably includes a latch member which in its initial condition blocks movement of the actuator in order to resist operation of the lighter. The latch member is movable to a ready position so that the actuator may be depressed in order to produce a flame. It is preferred that the lighter contain additional or alternative forces on the latch member to improve the ability of the latch member to return to the blocking position over the life of the lighter and to improve the consistency of the latch member's movement and return. In some of the embodiments, this additional or alternative force is provided by a bending moment or flexing force preferably applied to the latch member through a flexing mechanism to flex the latch along at least a portion of its length. Alternatively or in addition to, a biasing member may assist in returning the latch member to the initial position over the life of the lighter and improve the consistency of the latch force.

A lighter of the disposable type, ignition of which requires depression of an actuator that is resistant to the manipulations of unintended users. The lighter is normally maintained in a position that prevents depression of the actuator through the incorporation of a mechanism that increases the difficulty of operation. The safety mechanism requires displacement in two directions in order to allow full depression of the actuator and activation of an ignition means. When the mechanism is so displaced through the application of force by a user, it cannot remain displaced without continuous application of such force and will return to the normal, blocking, position when the force is removed.

A selectively actuatable lighter device is disclosed which includes a body defining reservoir for containing a combustible gaseous medium such as butane, and having a valve arranged to be selectively actuated between a normally closed position and an open position which permits the exit of the gaseous medium. Such lighter can selectively produce sparks at a location proximate to the gaseous medium exit to ignite the gaseous medium. Such lighter device embodies a resiliently releasable latch which normally prevents actuation of a valve actuator to the open position thereby preventing actuation of the valve. The latch is selectively movable to a position out of interference with the valve actuator, so that the gaseous medium may be released and ignited by the sparks. The latch is resiliently structured and mounted such that once a flame is produced and the valve actuator is released, the latch returns to its closed or latched position to prevent actuation of the valve to the open position by prevention of the pivotal motion of the valve actuator. To 're-use' the lighter, the latch must again be moved to an unlatched position so that the valve actuator can be opened for subsequent ignition of the gaseous medium.

A lighter of the disposable type, ignition of which requires depression of an actuator that is resistant to the manipulations of unintended users. The lighter is normally maintained in a position that prevents depression of the actuator through the incorporation of a mechanism that increases the difficulty of operation. The actuation inhibiting mechanism requires a downward displacement and a tilted displacement in order to allow full depression of the actuator and activation of an ignition mechanism. Preferably, at least one biasing element is provided so that when the actuator is displaced through the application of force by a user, it returns to the initial blocking position when the force is removed.

The lighter of the present invention provides a resiliently deformable guard that covers a portion of the striking wheel assembly. To operate the lighter, a user exerts sufficient pressure to depress the guard before rotating the striking wheel assembly. Additionally, the lighter of the present invention provides blocking members to engage the deformable guard when the user depresses the valve actuator before exerting pressure to depress the guard.

The lighter of the present invention provides a slip ring which is concentrically mounted about the striking wheel assembly of a conventional lighter. To operate the lighter, digital pressure is applied to frictionally couple the slip ring and the striking wheel assembly together to move in concert to create a spark. The slip ring has disposed along its circumference an elongated slot. The ends of the slot engage the flint housing to halt the movement of the ring, serving to limit the range of motion of the slip ring, and, hence, the motion of the striking wheel assembly. Lastly, the slip ring includes protrusions which hold the slip ring in a neutral position until force is applied in a backward direction to disengage the slip ring.

To 're-use' the lighter, the latch must again be moved to an unlatched position so that the valve actuator can be opened for subsequent ignition of the gaseous medium.

The lighter according to the present invention also resists forcible disabling of the latch by providing an angled portion at one of the contact points of the latch with the housing (or of the latch with the valve actuator), so that the latch will displace to a secondary position. This displacement absorbs the excessive force applied without deformation or damage to the latching mechanism, allowing for the latch to return to the normal closed or latched position after release of the excessive force.
